Design and Motifs

The field carries an all over floral design built on a lattice of thin vines that cross and re-cross in long diagonals, with no central medallion to interrupt it. Sitting on that framework are large fan-shaped palmettes, broad serrated leaves, and round multi-petal rosettes drawn with 8 and 10 petals, each one outlined so it lifts clearly off the dark ground. Between the big elements are smaller cross-form blossoms, buds on short stems, and paired leaf sprays that fill every gap without crowding. The layout mirrors across the width, so the left and right halves answer each other while the vertical repeat marches the length of the rug. Framing all of this is a wide main border of meandering vine with alternating cartouche-like palmettes and rosettes, held between narrow guard bands of small repeating cruciform flowers, and the corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning the angle cleanly instead of being cut off.

Color: Black Ground, Deep Red Border, Antique Gold Light

The ground is a dense, near-charcoal black that photographs almost blue-black under strong light and settles to a flat matte black in a room. Against it the ornament runs warm: antique gold and old-ivory palmettes, softer sand and buff rosettes, and leaves in a muted olive and sage green that keep the palette from turning brassy. Small accents of brick red and rust appear at the centers of the rosettes and along the leaf tips, and a few blossoms carry a pale blue-grey core, visible in the close-up photograph. The wide main border shifts to a deep brick red, almost burgundy, with its vines and flowers picked out in the same gold, olive and ivory, and the guard stripes on either side are a light antique gold that acts as a bright frame between the red border and the black field. The pile is good hand-spun wool, clipped at a medium height so the fine outlines stay legible, and the foundation is cotton, which is what keeps a rug this wide lying flat and square instead of drawing in at the sides.
