Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is a true all over rug design, a loose lattice of thick scrolling vines that meet at open lotus palmettes, with large 10 petal and 12 petal rosettes set on the vertical axis and smaller 4 petal buds scattered in the spaces between. The drawing is generous and slightly rounded rather than tight, which is exactly what the Ziegler idiom asks for: big forms, plenty of ground showing, nothing fussy. The wide main border carries alternating star rosettes and curled serrated leaves with long feathered tendrils, and it is held between two narrow guard stripes of linked 4 petal flowerheads. A fine dark outline runs the length of the field edge and separates green from beige cleanly, and the corners resolve properly, with the vine turning rather than being cut off.
