9'1" x 12'4" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Light Green & Ivory All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

This 9'1" x 12'4" hand-knotted Oriental rug is a Ziegler design woven in India on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, and it has never been used. The field is a soft light green that leans slightly blue, covered edge to edge with gold, ivory and rose floral work, and it is framed by a broad ivory border. At just over 9 by 12 feet it is a true room-size piece, the standard footprint for a sofa group or a 10 seat dining table, and it sits comfortably among our other 9x12 Oriental rugs. Rug number 6215 ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuine hand-knotted work, with the size, materials and origin recorded.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first studio photograph reads warmer and more golden than the rug actually is. The floor shots and the close-up details are the truer record: the field is a soft light green with a cool blue-grey cast, and the tonality shifts with the light in the room. This is a quality of the wool and the dye, not wear, fading or damage.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The weaver drew a balanced all-over floral design built from large fan-shaped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, curled serrated leaves and thin arabesque vines that link one flower head to the next across the whole field. Look closely at the detail shots and you can see how the drawing repeats in mirrored pairs, with small star rosettes and tiny buds filling the ground between the big blossoms so nothing is left empty. The ivory main border carries its own rhythm of broad palmettes alternating with leafy scrolling vine, set off by a narrow olive guard stripe on each side patterned with small flower heads. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, which is the mark of a cartoon that was drawn properly rather than improvised at the edges.

A Soft Green and Ivory Palette

The ground is the reason to buy this rug. It is a muted light green with a blue-grey undertone, closer to sage and seafoam than to any strong emerald, and it gives the piece an already-lived-with calm rather than a new-rug brightness. Over that ground the flowers are worked in honey gold, soft apricot, ivory and antique rose, with deeper olive green in the leaves and small points of dark navy and wine red at the flower centers for contrast. The border flips the balance: a warm ivory field with the palmettes drawn in rose, olive, brown and gold, so the eye reads a pale frame around a cooler center. It is a restrained, low-contrast palette that works with white, grey, taupe and natural wood interiors, and it will appeal to anyone shopping green area rugs who wants colour without a dominant statement.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work now comes from. The Ziegler design is a workshop interpretation of classical floral drawing, softened in colour for modern rooms, and the Indian weaving centres have become very good at it: tightly packed wool knots, clean straight edges, a dense and even pile, and dyes held consistently across a rug of this size. If you want the background on how this category relates to the pieces from the classical weaving towns, our guide to the difference between Persian rugs and Oriental rugs explains it plainly. What matters on the floor is that this one is knot by knot handwork, not machine made, and that at 9'1" x 12'4" it was woven in perfect condition and has never been walked on.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
