3'1" x 19'11" Khotan Design Runner Rug | Peach & Blue All-Over Rosettes | New, Made in Pakistan
A runner this long is ordered, not stumbled upon. At 3'1" x 19'11" it covers almost 20 feet of floor in one unbroken line, which is why pieces in this length are woven to order rather than stocked by the roll. The weaver worked a Khotan drawing in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation: seven rosette medallions marching up a pale field, held between a wide repeating border and two narrow guard stripes. The clip is low and even, the handle is supple enough to lie flat against a baseboard without lifting, and the finish has the soft washed quality collectors associate with old East Turkestan weaving. Condition is brand new and never used, and the runner ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted wool piece made in Pakistan.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first studio photograph was shot under cool light and reads the blues stronger and the field cooler than the rug looks in person. The showroom photographs on tile are the truer record of the peach and ivory ground. The soft lines crossing the width in several images are fold marks from rolled storage, not wear, not fade and not damage. They relax once the runner is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The field runs as an all-over repeat rather than a single centred medallion, which is the right choice at this length because the eye never has to search for a focal point. Each unit is an 8 petal rosette set inside a rounded cartouche, flanked by paired cloudband scrolls and small split-leaf sprays, with tiny shield shaped pendants and upright comb motifs filling the ground between them. Drawing is deliberately plain and slightly angular, with the rosette petals built from blocky steps instead of curved outlines, exactly the vocabulary of the old Khotan and Samarkand weavings this pattern descends from. The main border carries a procession of upright vase and pomegranate forms separated by vertical bars, a pattern that reads almost rhythmic when you walk the length of it, and the 4 corners are resolved cleanly with a squared rosette block at each end. Two narrow guard stripes of running floral meander frame the main band, and both ends finish in plain ivory kilim with knotted fringe.
A Peach and Blue Palette With a Washed, Sunlit Quality
The ground is an ivory to soft peach, warmer and more apricot toward one end and cooling toward cream at the other, a natural abrash from hand-spun wool taking dye at slightly different rates. Against it the drawing is worked in two registers of blue: a deeper teal that outlines the rosette centres and the border bars, and a lighter powder blue that carries the vines, scrolls and filler motifs so they sit back rather than shout. The border reverses the balance, putting pale peach and ivory motifs on a solid blue ground, which gives the runner a defined edge line down both sides of a corridor. Small touches of grey green appear in the leaf sprays and a pale straw tone lights the rosette hearts. Because every color here is low in saturation, the piece behaves as a quiet neutral in a room with warm oak, limestone or travertine and still reads as blue against a white wall.
Khotan Weaving, Made in Pakistan
Pakistan is where much of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and the weaving towns around Lahore and Peshawar have built their reputation on exactly this kind of piece: hand-spun wool, a disciplined cotton foundation, and classical drawing finished with a gentle wash that takes the newness off the color. Every knot here was tied by hand on a vertical loom, with the long warp kept under steady tension so the runner stays straight along nearly 20 feet, the single hardest thing to achieve in a narrow weave. The wool is dense enough underfoot to take daily traffic and short enough in clip to keep the small motifs legible. If you are weighing this against a village weave from a different tradition, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from a wider Oriental rug is worth reading, and you can see how this length behaves in situ among our other long hallway runners.
