4'9" x 7'2" Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Field Floral Medallion | Wool & Silk, Never Used
This 4'9" x 7'2" Persian Tabriz was woven in the 2000's and has never been on a floor. The pile is wool with silk worked into the finer drawing, so the flowers and the thin vine lines catch light differently from the ivory ground around them. It is a light, formal piece: an ivory field carrying a dense floral network, a coral and camel medallion at the center, and a peach main border framed by ivory guard stripes. At 57" x 86" it suits a seating group, a bed foot, or a dining table for 4, and it sits comfortably among our 5x7 Persian rugs. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.
Please Note About the Photographs:
Several photos were taken on a warm cork-colored floor, which reflects back into the pile and makes the ivory ground read more yellow than it is. The first image is the accurate color reference: the field is a soft ivory to cream, not gold. There is no fading, no staining and no wear in this rug.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is classic workshop Tabriz: a round central medallion built from an 8 petal rosette inside layered coral and camel palmettes, with a small pendant leaf spray above and below it on the vertical axis. Around it the ivory field is filled edge to edge with curved vine, split palmettes, grape-cluster blossoms and small bouquets, each one shaded rather than flat, which is what separates a drawn Tabriz from a stamped-out commercial copy. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the medallion's vocabulary in a softened mauve-grey ground, so the eye reads a medallion-and-corner layout even though the field itself never stops flowering. The peach main border runs a continuous serrated leaf and rosette scroll, and it is held between narrow ivory guard borders of alternating blue and red flower heads, the same device used to finish the ends before the plain ivory kilim and fringe.
A Study in Ivory, Peach and Coral
The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to white, and it is left open enough that the palette on top of it stays legible. The medallion moves from a deep coral-red core out through rust, terracotta and a dry camel brown. The border is peach, a touch more pink than the medallion, which keeps the frame from competing with the center. Against those warm tones the weaver set cool accents: cornflower and navy blue flower heads, soft sage and pistachio green leafwork, dusty rose, pale lilac and the occasional spot of aubergine. The silk is used selectively, in the thin outlines and the lighter petals, so the rug reads matte and quiet from across the room and then shows its sheen when you stand over it. It is an easy rug to place with light walls, warm woods, brass and off-white upholstery.
Tabriz Weaving and Why the Quality Shows
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been the organizing center of the Persian rug trade for centuries, with workshops that measure their own fineness in Raj, the number of knots counted across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches. A rug at this scale of drawing cannot be woven loosely: the curved vine, the shaded petals and the hair-thin outlines only hold their shape when the knot count is high and the weaver uses a hook to pack each row down on a tight cotton foundation. The back of this piece, shown against the ruler, is even and finely gridded from selvage to selvage, the pile is low and crisp, and the ends are finished with the full ivory fringe still intact. Because it has never been walked on, the pile stands exactly as it came off the loom.
