7'2" x 11' Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Floral Field with Red Medallion | Estate Piece

This is an estate Persian Tabriz that has been kept well and used gently, and it shows in the pile: full, even, 3/8" of wool across the whole 7'2" x 11' surface with no thinning through the middle where a rug of this size normally takes its traffic. The drawing is classic northwest Persian workshop work, an ivory field of flowering vine held together by a red star medallion, with deep indigo spandrels squaring off the 4 corners and a red main border framing the whole thing. It is a formal rug that still reads warm, mostly because the ivory ground has aged to a soft buttery tone rather than staying stark white. Design and Motifs

The center holds a red lobed star medallion built around an 8 petal rosette, layered with navy palmettes and small ivory blossoms so the eye keeps finding another level of detail the closer it gets. A navy pendant sits above and below the medallion, and two small indigo cartouches flank it on the long axis, a device Tabriz weavers use to stretch a medallion visually across a wide field. Around all of it runs a dense curvilinear vine: split leaves, curling saz foliage, rosettes, and scattered bud clusters drawn with fine outlining in dark brown that keeps each motif crisp against the ivory. The corner spandrels repeat the same vocabulary in reverse, dark ground with light flowers. The main border carries a rhythm of large palmettes and serrated leaves separated by turning vine, with narrow gold and navy guard stripes on either side, and the outer guard finishes in a small running floral meander.

The Ivory and Red Color Palette

The field is ivory with a warm golden cast, closer to unbleached cream than to white, and it is the reason this rug lifts a dark floor instead of sitting on it. Against that ground the medallion reads as a clear brick red, a touch lighter and softer than the tomato red of the main border, and the two reds together give the composition depth. Indigo does the structural work: a deep navy in the outlines and the pendant motifs, and a lighter mid blue in the spandrels and border rosettes that keeps the dark areas from going flat. Scattered through the vine are accents of old gold, camel, soft sage green and pale peach, with small touches of near black in the leaf tips. Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality

Tabriz sits in the far northwest of Persia and has been the country's most commercially serious weaving city for well over a century, the place where the medallion and vine formula was standardized and exported to the rest of the market. Tabriz weavers work on a cotton foundation with a hook knife, which is why Persian Tabriz rugs hold a straight edge and a true rectangle the way this one does, with dead flat selvages and no waisting along the 11' sides. The reverse photo shows a tight, regular knot with the design fully legible from the back, the sign of a weave fine enough to carry curved line drawing without the flowers turning blocky. Wool from this region is springy and slightly lustrous, and at 3/8" pile it wears for decades under normal household use.
