6'11" x 10'4" Persian Qum Rug | Ivory Field, Navy Medallion & Salmon Border | Kork Wool, Never Used

This 6'11" x 10'4" Persian Qum rug is a city piece in the classic Qum formula: a soft ivory ground drawn edge to edge with flowers, a navy blue medallion at the center, and a wide salmon surround that frames the field before the navy main border takes over. The pile is kork wool clipped short at about 1/4", knotted on a cotton foundation, so the drawing stays crisp and the flat ivory ground reads clean rather than shaggy. It has never been used, never been on a floor, and the ends and sides are original and tight, with full white fringe at both ends. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.

Please Note About the Photographs:

These photographs were taken under different lighting. The overhead shot reads warmer and pinker overall, and the close detail shot reads lighter and cooler than the rug is in person. The field is a true ivory, the surround is salmon, and the main border is deep navy blue, as seen in the two full floor photos.

Design and Motifs

The center holds an oval navy medallion built around an 8 petal rosette, ringed by small palmettes and hooked leaf forms, with a pale pendant reaching out at top and bottom. Around it the ivory field is filled with a dense, freely drawn garden: open rosettes, tulip and carnation heads, curled saz leaves and hair-thin vines that link one bloom to the next without ever repeating in an obvious grid. A lobed, cloud-edged reserve separates that ivory field from the salmon surround, and the salmon band carries the same flowers at larger scale so the eye reads one continuous garden rather than two zones. The navy main border runs a scrolling vine of ivory and rose blossoms with upright flowering sprays between them, and it is held on both sides by narrow camel guard stripes with a saw-tooth minor stripe and small paired floral heads, visible in the corner and measure photos. The corners resolve cleanly, the drawing on the 4 corners matching in a way you only see when the weaver worked from a proper cartoon.

Ivory, Navy Blue and Salmon Orange

Three colors carry the rug. The field is a warm ivory, closer to cream than white, and because the pile is kork wool it holds a quiet sheen that shifts as you walk around it. The medallion and main border are a deep navy blue, dark enough to read almost ink black in low light. Between them sits the salmon orange surround, a soft coral pink tone that keeps the whole rug from going formal and cold. Inside those three, the flowers bring in rose, brick red, sky blue, sage green, soft mushroom brown and pale ivory outlines, while the guard stripes and the minor border run a camel gold that warms the navy. The outer selvage band is a rose red, which you can see clearly in the corner close-up where it meets the white fringe. It is a light, pretty palette rather than a dark one, and it suits rooms with pale walls, wood floors, or blue and cream upholstery.

Qum: Weaving Town and Quality

Qum sits south of Tehran and is the youngest of the great Persian weaving cities, with serious production only from the 1930s onward. It grew up with nothing to fall back on but quality, so its workshops went straight to the finest materials, pure silk and kork wool, the soft fleece taken from the lamb's neck, shoulders and underbelly. The rivalry between those workshops is what drives the standard, and it shows here in the fineness of the vine work and the short, even clip across the whole surface. On the reverse the knots are tight and regular, the cotton warps sit straight, and the rug lies flat without a wave, which is what you want from a city weave at this size. In a house, 7x10 is the workhorse format, and you can compare this piece against the rest of our 7 x 10 Persian rugs before you decide. Unused Qum pieces in this palette are not common, and the short pile means the drawing you see today is the drawing you will still see in 30 years.
