6'11" x 10' Persian Hamedan Rug | Diamond Lattice Panel Field | Dusty Red Wool, Excellent Condition

This is a hand-knotted Persian Hamedan rug measuring 6'11" x 10', a dusty red field broken into dozens of small diamond panels, each one filled with its own tiny repeating pattern. It reads as a village piece in the best sense: confident geometry, heavy wool, and color choices made at the loom rather than on paper. The 3/8" wool pile sits firm on a cotton foundation, the handle is substantial without being stiff, and the condition is excellent with full pile across the field and clean selvedges. At just under 7 feet by 10 feet it is one of the easiest proportions to live with, and it belongs in the same working group as our other 7x10 Persian rugs. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and knotting.

Design and Motifs

The field is drawn as a diagonal lattice of small lozenges, and no two neighbors are filled the same way. Some panels carry dense diaper grids of stars and dots, others hold 4 petal rosettes, hooked blossoms, tiny cypress trees or paired bird forms with yellow wings. At the center sits a large stepped diamond medallion outlined in ivory zigzag, its navy ground planted with flowering sprigs and its core a small ivory cartouche ringed in blue buds. Gold diamond grids anchor the medallion top and bottom, and slender ivory pole motifs run out from both ends along the vertical axis. The 4 corners are weighted with larger blue and brown panels that frame the composition. Surrounding all of this is a 5 band border system: a wide navy main border of ivory stars and triangles, a light blue vine band on either side, a slim gold stripe, and an outer guard of red hearts on pale ground. If you like an all over design that rewards close looking, this is that rug.

Color Palette

The ground is a dusty red, closer to a soft brick with a rose cast than to a bright scarlet, and it stays even from end to end with the gentle tonal movement good wool gives. Against it the panel fills run through ivory and cream, a chalky light blue that also carries the inner border vines, deep navy in the medallion ground and main border, and a warm saffron gold in the lattice grids and the thin outer stripe. Scattered through the smaller panels are moss and sage green, soft coral and apricot, dark chocolate brown, a dusty pink in several of the grid panels, and clear cobalt blue in the little star blossoms. Lemon yellow shows up only in the small bird and rosette figures, where it functions as a highlight. The pale ivory and light blue borders lighten the whole perimeter, so the red field reads as the warm center rather than as an overwhelming block of color, which makes the rug sit comfortably with wood floors, cream walls and both dark and light upholstery.

Hamedan Weaving and Quality

Hamedan sits in western Persia and is the market town for hundreds of surrounding weaving villages, which is why Hamedan rugs are the backbone of the Persian trade: single wefted, tightly packed, geometric in drawing and built from local wool that is famously hard wearing. The weavers work from memory and from village pattern tradition rather than from a full cartoon, which is exactly what produces the panel by panel variation you see here, with small shifts in scale and color that a workshop piece would never allow. The knotting is even, the lines of the lattice hold straight through the full 10 foot length, and the ivory zigzag outlines stay crisp at the turns, all signs of a weaver who knew the design well. The pile has the slightly dry, springy feel of mountain wool, which resists crushing under furniture and takes decades of foot traffic without flattening. For a buyer who wants a genuine village Persian with real character and real durability in a true room size, this piece delivers on both counts.
