6'5" x 10'8" Persian Hamadan Rug | Navy Blue | Rectangular

A hand-knotted Persian rug measuring 6'5" x 10'8", long and narrow for its width, in a rectangular format that falls at the lower end of the large rug range. The field is a dark navy blue, covered edge to edge with small flowering stems, and a single medallion in salmon and ivory sits at the centre. A broad brick red border frames it on all four sides. The condition is given as excellent, and the pile in the photographs reads even across the whole surface.

The design

This is a classic Hamadan drawing: one central medallion with a stepped, lobed outline, a small pendant above and below it, and ivory corner spandrels that cut across the field at each end. The medallion itself is built from rosettes and palmettes in salmon, with a pale ivory core holding a blue eight-petal flower. Around it the field is filled rather than left open, with curving stems carrying roses, buds, serrated leaves and the occasional blue palmette, all drawn at a small scale so the navy ground still reads as a continuous dark plane. The main border runs a vine of rosettes and palmettes, flanked by narrow guard stripes, one of them a running zigzag that keeps the frame from going heavy.

The colour

The field is navy blue, deep enough to look almost black in the full views and clearly indigo in the close-up, where lighter blue flecks run through the ground. Against it the flowers are salmon and rose, with a warmer brick red in the medallion and in the main border, and ivory used sparingly at the medallion core, the spandrels and the outer guard stripe. Soft olive and tan appear in the leaves. The overall effect is a dark rug with warm pink and red drawing on it, rather than a high-contrast one.

The making

Hand-knotted in Persia, with a cut pile and a clearly visible knotted structure on the reverse, shown in the last photograph against a ruler. The spec table records the weave, origin, design and condition but does not state the material, so none is claimed here. It arrives as one of the hand-knotted pieces in our full collection, in the exact size listed above: 6'5" x 10'8".
