6'6" x 10' Persian Kashan Rug | Ivory Medallion Field | Olive Grey Floral Borders | Excellent Condition

Laid flat, this 6'6" x 10' Persian Kashan rug reads as one continuous ivory garden with a small teal medallion anchoring the center. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, the pile stands a full 3/8 inch, and the condition is excellent: no repairs, no thin areas, straight sides and complete original ivory fringe at both ends. At 78 inches by 120 inches it sits right in the middle of the 7x10 Persian rug range, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a small stepped medallion built around an 8 petal rosette, ringed by a teal green cartouche and finished with slender pendant finials pointing up and down the length of the field. Around it the ivory ground is filled edge to edge with curling vine work: split leaf arabesques, lotus palmettes, tiny five petal blossoms and feathered leaves that spiral back on themselves without ever repeating in an obvious grid. All 4 corners carry camel spandrels drawn with the same vocabulary, which frames the medallion the way a classical Kashan cartoon intends. The main border is a wide band of alternating palmettes and upright floral sprays joined by a continuous vine, and it is flanked on both sides by narrow rosette guard stripes and a fine outer navy stripe, so the eye is walked in toward the field rather than stopped at the edge.

Ivory, Olive Grey and the Teal Center

The field is a warm ivory, closer to clotted cream than to white, and the wool takes light differently along the pile direction so the ground shifts between oatmeal and pale bone as you walk around it. The borders and spandrels are an olive grey camel, a dusty middle tone that keeps the palette calm and lets the ivory look brighter than it actually is. Inside the drawing the colors are small and plentiful: teal green in the medallion core and scattered through the border leaves, a deeper marine and navy for outlines and for the largest palmettes, walnut and cinnamon brown in the vines, soft ivory highlights on individual petals, and pin dots of brick red and rose that appear at flower centers. Nothing shouts. This is the restrained, decorator friendly side of the Kashan palette, an easy match for stone, oak, walnut and warm plaster walls.

Kashan, the Weaving Town and the Weave

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its weaving goes back to the Safavid court workshops. The town is known for soft lustrous local wool and for the standard formula of a red field with a navy lobed medallion and ivory spandrels. This piece inverts that formula, putting the ivory on the floor of the design and the quiet camel in the border, which is the harder version to draw because every vine has to hold its line against a pale ground. The back photograph, with a ruler across the border for scale, shows the reason it holds: tight even rows on a cotton foundation, small knots and no slack in the weave, workshop discipline rather than village work.
