6'6" x 9'10" Indian Rug | Antique Sarouk All Over Floral Design | Brand New Wool Pile

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug woven in India in the antique Sarouk manner, with a midnight blue field carried edge to edge by flowering sprays and a wide coral border. The wool has the silky handle that makes this grade worth paying for: stand at one end and the pile throws light, walk to the other and the same blossoms read a shade deeper. At 6'6" x 9'10" it sits in the most useful of the 7x10 area rug sizes, long enough to anchor a seating group without crowding the walls. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and measurements.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first studio photograph was shot under warmer lighting and reads hotter and more orange than the rug actually is. The showroom and close-up photographs are the accurate ones: the border is a soft coral salmon and the field is a deep dark blue, exactly as listed in the specification table.

Design and Motifs

The field has no medallion. Instead the drawing runs as a repeating all over composition, mirrored left to right along the center axis: upright floral sprays built on a central rosette, flanked by long serrated leaves, split palmettes, tulip buds and small 5 petal blossoms scattered through the open ground. Look closely at the close-up photographs and you can see the detached sickle leaves with teal centers, the curled tendrils that tie one spray to the next, and the deliberate asymmetry in how the smaller flowers fall, which is the mark of hand drawing rather than mechanical repetition. The border system runs 5 bands deep. The wide coral main border alternates 8 petal rosettes with sage and ivory fan palmettes and dark navy bud pairs, bracketed inside and out by narrow floral guard stripes and a fine meander, with the corners resolved cleanly on all 4 sides. It is a classical formula, which is exactly why it reads as calm rather than busy once the rug is on the floor.

Colors: Dark Blue, Coral and Sage Green

The field is a true dark blue, close to midnight, with enough variation in the wool that it never flattens into a solid block. Against it the drawing works in coral and salmon, from a soft blush in the smaller blossoms up to a hot orange coral in the serrated leaves, warmed further by gold and butter yellow in the larger palmettes. Sage green appears in restrained amounts, in leaf tips, calyxes and the pale rosette centers, with deeper teal green used almost as a shadow inside the sickle leaves. Ivory and cream carry the outlines and keep the floral forms legible on the dark ground. The main border reverses the scheme, coral ground with sage, ivory and navy ornament, so the rug frames itself: navy pulling inward, coral pushing outward. Practically, the dark field hides traffic and the coral gives you a warm accent to pick up in upholstery, curtains or wood tones.

Origin and Weaving Quality: Made in India

This rug was hand-knotted in India, and that should be read as a recommendation rather than a disclaimer. India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, with weaving centers that still work on vertical looms with hand-spun yarn, natural dye recipes and traditional cartoons, and the Sarouk all over floral is one of the designs they interpret best. The construction here is orthodox: cotton warp and weft for a flat, stable rug that lies true, and a dense wool pile clipped medium short so the drawing stays crisp. The wool is the headline, an unusually silky and lustrous grade that gives this piece the sheen you can see across the showroom photographs. If you are weighing it against a village or workshop piece from Persia, our guide on the difference between a Persian rug and an Oriental rug explains exactly what separates the two and what you are paying for in each.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
