6' x 9' Chinese French Floral Rug | Flat-Weave | Cream and Green

A 6' x 9' rug made in China in a French floral design. The ground is cream and mostly open, with flowering stems drawn loosely across it from edge to edge, and the surface is flat rather than shaggy, so the drawing stays sharp. A thin green band runs round the outside and reads almost like a picture frame.

Design

There is no medallion and no repeating grid. Long stems curve up through the field and cross one another, carrying full open roses, flat gold daisies, five-petal blossoms, small blue pansies and tight clusters of blue and gold florets that read as hydrangea heads. Buds and half-opened flowers fill the gaps, and the leaves are drawn naturalistically, some turned to show a paler underside. The largest flowers sit near the two ends, so the field grows quieter towards the middle. The border is plain and narrow: a cream guard, a single orange line, then a solid dark green outer band that finishes the rectangular shape without competing with the flowers.

Colour

The ground is a warm cream, closer to unbleached than to white. The foliage runs through several greens, from a grey sage in the small leaves to a deep pine in the border band and the heavier stems. The blues are the liveliest note, stepping from a pale powder in the smallest petals up to a strong cobalt and near navy in the flower centres. Against them the roses and daisies sit in gold and pale yellow, with a few blossoms pushed further into orange, which is picked up again in the single line inside the border. The palette is light overall, and the shading within each flower does most of the work.

Making

The spec table records the rug as hand-knotted with a flat-weave surface, and the photographs show exactly that: a dense, even, stitch-like face with no raised pile, so the pattern lies flush with the ground. The folded corner shows the reverse, where the same design comes through softly against the backing. It is of recent make and the condition is given as perfect, with the ends and edges intact and the colours unfaded.
