7'10" x 10'4" Indian Oriental Rug | French Country Aubusson Panel Design | Hand-Knotted Wool

This 7'10" x 10'4" piece takes a French drawing room idea, the Aubusson panel layout, and builds it in knotted wool pile instead of flat tapestry weave. The field is organized as a strapwork lattice in camel and brown, and every compartment inside that lattice holds its own small painted bouquet on a soft sage green ground. A wide brown border of acanthus scrolls and open roses wraps the whole field, closed by a narrow green outer band and ivory cotton fringe at both ends. Woven entirely by hand in India, it behaves like a European formal design with the weight and wearability of a proper Oriental rug, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. Among 8x10 rugs this is the footprint most buyers are measuring for, with an extra few inches of length to spare.

Design and Motifs

The field runs 4 panels across and 5 panels down, 20 compartments in all, each one framed by an interlocking brown strap that turns back on itself at every crossing. Where the straps meet, the weaver has set a small 8 petal rosette in rose and gold with a tiny blue center, so the grid itself carries ornament rather than acting as plain outline. Inside each compartment sits a loose naturalistic bouquet: cabbage roses, tulip buds, carnations and trailing leaves, drawn in the shaded European manner instead of the stylized Persian palmette, and no two bouquets in the field repeat their arrangement exactly. The main border abandons the grid entirely and runs a continuous acanthus scroll, each C shaped volute cradling a rose and a spray of dark leaves, with a small wave and dart guard stripe on either side. It is a busy design that still reads calmly from standing height because the lattice holds everything in order.

Sage Green, Camel Brown and Rose

The dominant color is a soft sage green, cooler and dustier than an olive, and it fills every compartment of the lattice so the green is what the eye settles on first. Against it, the strapwork and the main border are worked in a warm camel brown that shifts toward tobacco in the border and toward pale gold along the inner outlines, which keeps the two tones from flattening into each other. The flowers supply the third register: rose and blush pink petals, a deeper raspberry at the flower hearts, mustard gold on the fuller blooms, and dark teal to near navy in the leaves, which is what gives the bouquets their depth at close range. Ivory appears only in the small guard stripes and the fringe, and it functions as a highlight rather than a color in its own right. The result is a warm, low contrast palette that suits rooms built on wood, leather, brass and cream, and it is an easy fit for anyone shopping green rugs who wants something softer than emerald.

Made in India, Where Hand-Knotted Weaving Lives Now

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is made today, and this rug is a fair example of why. The weave is even from selvage to selvage, the lattice lines stay straight across 94" of width without wandering, and the drawing is fine enough to shade a single rose petal in three separate tones, which is not something a coarse weave can do. The wool has been clipped at a medium pile height, so the pattern stays crisp while the hand still feels full, and the cotton foundation gives the rug the flat, obedient lay you want under furniture legs. The fringe is a continuation of that cotton warp, knotted off and trimmed clean, and the back shows the knot rows plainly for anyone who wants to check the work. At 7'10" x 10'4" and in perfect condition, it is a room size floor piece meant to be walked on for decades, not a delicate wall hanging.
