7'11" x 10'1" Zigler Chobi Peshawar Rug | Soft Green All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool, New
This 7'11" x 10'1" Zigler Chobi came off the loom in Peshawar and arrived here with the pile still full and unwalked, tag F-4336 attached to the back. The field is a quiet, chalky green, closer to sage than to emerald, and it is filled edge to edge with gold and ivory flowerheads rather than a single central medallion, which is what makes this drawing so easy to live with. It ships with a certificate of authenticity, and as a hand-knotted Oriental rug it belongs to the hand-spun wool and natural dye tradition that serious buyers look for. At this footprint it sits in the sweet spot of 8x10 area rugs, large enough to carry a full seating group yet still proportioned for a normal ceiling height.
Design and Motifs
The field runs as a true all-over floral design, built on staggered rows of large lotus palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and split serrated leaves joined by thin vine scrolls. Look at the close-up photographs and you can see how the weaver drew each palmette: a gold outer fan, an ivory inner cup, a small grey heart, and a single fine red outline traced around the shape to lift it off the green ground. That one red line, used sparingly in maybe a dozen places across the whole rug, is the only strong note of colour in the piece. The main border is wide and generous, roughly a sixth of the width on each side, carrying alternating star rosettes and leafy sprays between narrow guard stripes, with green outer bands that frame the beige and tie it back to the field. The corners resolve cleanly, the drawing never crowds the border, and the open spacing in the field is deliberate so the wool itself does part of the work.
A Soft Green and Beige Palette
The ground colour is the reason to buy this rug. It is a muted, dusty green with a grey cast, the sort of tone that reads as sage in daylight and almost celadon under lamps, and because the wool is hand-spun it carries gentle horizontal striation, called abrash, that keeps the large open areas alive rather than flat. Against it the flowerheads move through honey gold, pale wheat and warm ivory, with soft brown and grey shading inside the leaves and a few tiny red accents. The border is a creamy beige that warms toward gold where the pile catches light, so the overall contrast stays low and the rug behaves like a neutral in the room while still being unmistakably green. Among green Oriental rugs this is the calm, decorator-friendly end of the spectrum, and it sits comfortably with oak, walnut, linen upholstery and brass.
Woven in Peshawar
Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is where the Zigler Chobi style is woven today, and the city's workshops have spent 30 years refining it. Chobi means wood-coloured, a reference to the plant and wood-based dyes used for these soft golds and greens, and the yarn is hand-spun highland wool, which takes dye unevenly on purpose and gives the pile its slight sheen and its gentle variation in tone. The weave here is a tight single-knot construction on a cotton foundation, clipped to a medium-low pile so the drawing stays crisp, and the back photograph shows even, regular knot rows with no pulling or slack at the edges. Selvedges are wrapped by hand in a green that matches the outer band, and the fringe is the natural cotton warp, finished flat. It is a new rug in perfect condition, which means the full life of the wool is still ahead of it.
