7'2" x 7'2" Round Oriental Rug | Black All-Over Floral Field | Fine Wool & Silk

A true circle at 86" across, this hand-knotted round measures 7'2" x 7'2" and reads as one continuous piece of drawing with no seam and no repeat break anywhere in the ring. The pile is fine wool with silk worked into the flower heads, knotted on a cotton foundation, and the difference shows in person: the black ground stays matte while the ivory and gold blossoms catch light and shift as you walk around the rug. Pile depth is even across the whole diameter, the ivory fringe is hand-tied and intact on all sides, and the edges lie flat without the rippling that cheap rounds develop. Condition is excellent. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The weaver used an all-over floral design, a lattice of thin rose-brown vines that branch out from the center and carry rosettes, lotus palmettes, serrated saz leaves and small 4 petal buds all the way to the border. Because the field is round, the vine system is laid out radially, so the pattern is symmetrical from at least 4 directions and the rug never looks upside down no matter where you stand. The blossoms are drawn large and open, each one shaded with 3 or 4 tones so the petals have depth rather than reading as flat silhouettes. Around the field sit 5 concentric bands: a fine ivory vine stripe, a slate blue guard of linked rosettes, the wide burgundy main border with alternating standing lilies and curled-leaf palmettes, a second slate blue guard, and a narrow taupe outer stripe of boxed 4 petal flowers, all closed by a solid black selvage line. The border detail photo shows how cleanly the curve of each band was kept as the weaving narrowed toward the circumference, which is the hardest part of a round to get right.

A Black Field Read in Detail

The ground is a deep near-charcoal black, dense enough to work as a dark anchor in a light room but not so flat that the pattern disappears. Against it the palette is warm and quiet: cream and buttered ivory in the largest rosettes, pale butter gold in the smaller buds, dusty rose and terracotta in the flower centers, soft sage and moss green in the leaves, and cool slate blue scattered through the petal fans, which is the tone that keeps the whole thing from going too warm. The main border is a wine burgundy, more oxblood than fire red, and the slate blue guard stripes on either side of it give the eye a cool break before the ivory fringe. A faint rose-brown runs through every vine and stem, tying the field colors together. The overall effect from a few feet back is black and cream with a burgundy ring, while up close, as in the field close-up, you see 8 or 9 distinct colors at work in a single blossom.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece was hand-knotted in China, in the workshop tradition that has produced the finer end of traditional floral weaving for decades: drawn on a full-scale cartoon, knotted row by row on a vertical loom, then clipped low so the fine drawing stays legible. That low, tight clip is what lets the vine work and the shaded petals hold their shape, and it is also why the silk highlights register so clearly. Work like this belongs to the wider family of hand-knotted Oriental rug weaving rather than to any one village style, and the round format is a genuinely difficult exercise: the knot count per row has to change constantly as the diameter grows and then shrinks, so any error in counting shows as a wobble in the border rings. Here the rings are true and the circle is honest, with the fringe finished evenly the whole way around the 86" circumference.
