7'8" x 10' Oushak Rug | Mauve & Gold All-Over Rosette Lattice | Hand-Knotted Wool, New
This is a new, never used hand-knotted wool rug in the Oushak idiom, woven in India and measuring 7'8" x 10'. It belongs to the quiet end of the decorative market: a soft mauve lavender field, muted gold medallions, ivory drawing and a wide gold border, with nothing in the palette loud enough to fight the furniture. The scale is the easy one, so if you are comparing it against other 8x10 Oriental rugs, note that this one is hand-knotted rather than tufted or machine made, with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and hand-finished fringe at both ends. It ships with our certificate of authenticity recording the weave, materials, measurements and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first overhead photograph reads warmer and more golden than the rug actually is. The floor and close-up photographs are the truer guide: the field is a soft mauve lavender and the medallions are a muted, sandy gold. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The field is laid out as an all-over lattice of large rounded medallions set in even rows, each one filled with a central rosette and paired leaf and bud arms that reach out toward the four compass points. Between the medallions the ground carries small diamonds, star flowers and slender flowering stems, so there is detail to find without any clutter. Three borders frame the field: a narrow ivory inner band of repeating linked cartouches with small sprigs inside each one, a wide gold main border of interlocking lavender fretwork drawn in a continuous ribbon, and a narrow ivory outer stripe of brown cross flowers alternating with small diamonds. The drawing is relaxed and slightly rounded rather than ruler straight, which is exactly the character of the Oushak tradition and the reason the pattern reads as decorative rather than formal.
The Color: Mauve, Lavender and Soft Gold
The ground is a dusty mauve that leans lavender in the detail photographs, shifting gently from panel to panel the way hand-dyed wool does when the dye lots are not forced to match. Against it the medallions sit in a soft honey gold, outlined in ivory and cream, with the inner drawing picked out in warm brown, a little rust and occasional touches of pale sage and faint blue violet. The wide main border is a deeper camel gold, its fretwork traced in lavender so the border and field stay in the same family of tones. Nothing is saturated: this is a pastel scheme built from mauve, gold, brown and lavender, and it photographs differently depending on the light, going warmer and sandier under direct light and cooler and more lilac in shade. For rooms with cream walls, gray upholstery or pale oak floors, it is a very forgiving palette.
Oushak Weaving and Quality, Made in India
The Oushak name comes from western Anatolia, where weavers built a reputation on large-scale drawing, generous spacing and soft, luminous color rather than on extreme knot counts. That vocabulary is now woven with real skill in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is made, and this piece is a straightforward example of it: wool pile knotted on a cotton foundation, a medium knot count that suits the broad medallions and open ground, and a clipped pile with enough body to take furniture. Calling it an Oriental rug is accurate, and the back shown in the final photograph tells the story plainly: an even hand-knotted grid, tight selvages and fringe that is the warp of the rug itself rather than a sewn addition. Honest construction, honest origin, and a design that will look settled in a room on day one.
