This is a hand-knotted Turkish Oushak from the 1980s, woven in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn after an antique Oushak cartoon rather than a modern one. At 7'9" x 9'10" it covers a seating group or a dining table without crowding the walls, which puts it squarely in the most useful of all 8 x 10 area rug proportions. The pile is low and evenly worn in, the handle is supple, and the whole surface reads quiet: soft salmon, sage and gray with no hard contrast anywhere. Design and Motifs

A large octagonal medallion with stepped, lobed edges sits at the center, filled with a flowering rosette and paired leaf forms that mirror on both axes. Around it the field runs as a true all-over design: bands of 8 petal rosettes and squared floral medallions alternating with dense rows of tiny lozenges that act as a textured ground, plus small cypress and candlestick forms scattered along the horizontal registers. Four corner pieces echo the medallion in quarter form. The border system is layered, a wide main band of angular palmettes and vine flanked by narrow reciprocal guard stripes, and it holds the composition together without ever shouting. It is a classic Oushak formula, geometric in its skeleton and floral in its detail.

A Soft Salmon, Sage and Gray Palette

The field is a pale salmon that shifts toward terracotta in the close-up photos and toward warm sand under flat overhead light. Drawing is done in a muted sage green and a cool gray-blue, with straw and light olive picking out the rosette centers and the outer field edges. The main border deepens to a sea green that frames the softer interior. There is gentle abrash across the width, the natural tonal drift of hand-dyed wool, which keeps the salmon from ever looking flat. Nothing in the palette is saturated, so the rug sits comfortably with oak floors, linen upholstery, painted cabinetry and both warm and cool wall colors.

Oushak Weaving in Western Turkey

Oushak, in western Anatolia, has been a weaving center since the 15th century and its name became shorthand for a whole look: generous scale, soft glossy wool, and colors that read faded from the loom. This piece is a proper Oriental rug in the Turkish tradition, knotted row by row on a cotton warp and weft, with the back showing clean, regular knot nodes and crisp selvages, as seen in the reverse photograph. The wool has the long-staple luster typical of the region, which is why the surface picks up light and the low pile still feels dense underfoot after four decades.
