Woven in the 2000s and never laid on a floor, this 7' x 10' rug is a paradise garden read at close range. The ground is a midnight blue so deep it reads black until light hits it, and across it the weaver has set orchards, cypress and willow, birds in flight and deer standing in the grass, the whole composition mirrored on a vertical axis instead of resting on a medallion. Wool and silk are used together, the silk carrying the outlines and the brightest leaf tips so that the drawing lifts as you walk around it. A piece of this fineness belongs to the top tier of the Persian Nain rug tradition, and it sits comfortably among the most detailed 7 x 10 Persian rugs we stock. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion and no open ground. The field is a continuous garden built from repeating tree groups: domed fruit trees studded with rows of pale blossoms, fan shaped willows dropping their branches, upright cypress, and slender flowering trees whose trunks branch into fine peach colored twigs. Between them the weaver has hidden an entire menagerie, songbirds perched and in flight, pairs of deer grazing, hares, foxes and small grazing animals, peacocks with trailing tails, and blue glazed vases set on the ground line holding cut flowers. Everything repeats in mirror image left to right and top to bottom, which is how a drawing this busy stays legible. The ivory main border breaks the pattern deliberately: instead of a running vine it carries separate bouquets and flowering shrubs rising from small vases, each one drawn as its own little panel, framed by narrow guard stripes of powder blue blossoms on a pale ground and a fine dark rope stripe at the outer edge.

A Midnight Blue Field Against Ivory and Peach

The field color is the anchor: a midnight blue at the darkest end of the indigo range, close to black in shadow and clearly blue where daylight falls on it. Against that ground the palette is unusually soft for a dark rug. Foliage moves through sage, seafoam and a cool bottle green, while the blossoming trees are worked in powder blue and a chalky ivory. Peach runs through the whole design, in the branch work, the bird bodies and the domed fruit trees, and it is peach rather than orange, warm and dusty. Small burgundy flowers appear as punctuation, a few per square foot, just enough to keep the greens honest. The border shifts the temperature completely to a creamy ivory with a faint peach cast, so the rug frames itself in light. Silk in the highlights means the greens and peaches change value as you move, which is the single clearest sign in the room that this is not an all wool weave.

Nain Weaving and the 6La Standard

Nain sits in central Persia on the desert edge east of Isfahan, a town that wove fine wool cloth long before it wove rugs and brought that thread discipline with it when the looms turned to pile work in the 20th century. The La count describes how many plies make up the yarn: 9La is the workshop standard, and every ply removed means a thinner strand, a smaller knot and a finer drawing. A 6La Nain at roughly 500 knots per square inch is collector territory, and it is the only reason a garden this crowded can hold a bird's eye, a deer's leg and a single blossom as separate readable shapes. The back shows that evenness clearly, with tight straight rows across a cotton foundation and no slack in the handle. The pile is short and firm, the selvedges are tidy, and the rug has never been walked on.
