8'1" x 10'8" Jaldar Bokara Rug | Green Field Geometric Diamond Lattice | Brand New, Never Used
A green ground Bokara is an unusual thing to find, and this one is brand new off the loom with a tight, even clip and a full wool pile that still has its original sheen. The field is an olive green, covered edge to edge with rust stepped diamonds, and the whole design is framed by a deep band of narrow brown and rust stripes that runs roughly 14 inches wide on all 4 sides. At 8 feet by just under 11 feet it is a true 8x11 area rug, the size that covers a seating group without crowding the walls. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted wool rug made in Pakistan.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft diagonal lines and shadows across the field in the first 2 photographs are fold marks from pallet storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage, and they relax out once the rug is laid flat. Every rug leaving our warehouse is professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.
Design and Motifs
Jaldar refers to the lattice: instead of repeating rows of identical guls, the field is organized into a trellis of large rust diamonds, each one outlined in black and ivory with stepped, hook-like arms reaching out at the 4 points. Inside the bigger diamonds sits a small ivory and black cartouche holding an 8 point pink star, flanked by curling butter yellow palmettes and tiny leaf forms. Alternating with these are quieter rust lozenges carrying a single ivory rosette, and the green ground between them is sprinkled with small pink cruciform flowers and black diamond dots, so no area of the field reads as empty. The border is where the weaver showed off: counting outward from the field there are more than 10 separate guard stripes, including a green band set with diamond cartouches, several rows of running ivory ovals on rust, and an outer band of upright boteh forms. If you like this kind of disciplined repeat, it sits squarely in the family of geometric rugs rather than the curvilinear floral school.
Olive Green, Rust and Deep Brown
The field is a warm olive, close to avocado, with just enough yellow in it to read as a soft moss under lamplight rather than a cold forest green, and the close-up photographs show it shifting a shade lighter or darker depending on how the pile lies. Against that the medallions are a dry terracotta rust, slightly brick in the shadows, and the long border runs darker still, a brown rust that reads almost chocolate from a standing distance. The drawing is held together by black outlines, with ivory and a pale cream used as the lifting color inside every medallion and along the guard stripes. The one surprise is the pink: a soft rose appears in the little cross flowers across the field and again in the stars at the center of the main diamonds, which keeps the palette from going too earthy. The overmatched fringe and the plain green outer edge finish it cleanly. Buyers working around sage walls, cognac leather or walnut furniture tend to shortlist this against other green area rugs, and very few of those have a rust secondary this well matched.
Jaldar Bokara Weaving in Pakistan
The Bokara design came west with Turkmen weavers and was taken up by Pakistani workshops, who refined it into one of the most consistently well made categories of hand-knotted Oriental rug production. The Jaldar is the more demanding version of that repertoire, because the lattice has to stay square across 128 inches of length and every diamond has to land on the same count, which is harder than simply repeating a row of guls. Turn this one over, as in the folded photographs, and the back shows a clear grid with crisp knot definition and no loose or skipped areas, worked on a cotton foundation with a dense wool pile. The wool itself is good quality, springy under the hand, and the pile has been clipped low enough to keep the small pink flowers and ivory outlines legible. Nothing about this piece has been walked on yet: it carries its full original pile height, the selvedges are sound, and the fringe has never been trimmed or rewrapped.
