8'1" x 11'7" Persian Kashan Rug | Ivory Floral Medallion | Signed Cartouche | Excellent Condition
Light-ground Kashans in a true room size are harder to find than the familiar red ones, and this one is signed. Woven in the 2000's in central Persia, it measures 8'1" x 11'7", with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and a weaver's cartouche set into the top border. The ivory field has not been washed down or chemically lightened, so the wool still carries its own quiet sheen, and the pile stands full and even from end to end. Condition is excellent and the rug is ready to lay down as it is. It ships with our certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials, size and the presence of the signature, and if you want the background first, our Persian Kashan rugs guide covers how these pieces are drawn and woven.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a lobed rosette medallion, its core a ring of petals around a small flowerhead, framed by a pointed star of split palmettes. A slim pendant finial reaches toward each end of the field, and the 4 corners carry quartered spandrels outlined in a single dark line so they read as shapes rather than blocks of color. What fills the space between is the real work: an all-over floral network of lotus blossoms, serrated leaves, small 8 petal rosettes and hooked buds, all strung on thin arabesque vines that curve without ever stalling. The main border repeats a cartouche-and-palmette rhythm on the same ivory ground, bracketed by 4 narrow guard stripes of running vine and tiny blossoms, and the corner photo shows how cleanly the border turns the angle. It is a closely drawn, formal pattern that never tips into clutter.
The Ivory, Blue and Green Palette
The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to white, and it shifts slightly with the light because the wool takes the sheen differently along the pile. Drawing is done in two blues: a deep navy that outlines the medallion, the spandrels and the heavier palmettes, and a softer powder blue that fills the border grounds and the smaller blossoms. Greens run from olive to a pale pistachio in the leaves and leaf tips, and they are what keep the field from reading cold. Scattered through the vines are small accents of rust, terracotta and a muted salmon pink, plus the occasional touch of old gold in a flowerhead, each one no larger than a fingertip. The overall effect is pale and airy at a distance and surprisingly colorful up close, which is why pieces like this sit so easily with both dark wood and painted walls. Kashan: The Town and the Weave
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its workshops inherited the Safavid court tradition of curved-line floral drawing along with unusually soft, lustrous local wool. That combination is why the town's name travels so far; when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. A woven cartouche like the one in the top border of this rug means a workshop piece rather than anonymous village production, since the shop that cut the design put its name on it. The reverse, shown against a ruler, is tight and regular, with small square knots and no drift in the rows, and the handle is firm without being board-stiff. At 8'1" x 11'7" it covers a standard dining table with chairs pulled out or anchors a full seating group, and it sits comfortably alongside other 8x11 Persian rugs in scale.
