8'2" x 11'6" Persian Kashan Rug | Ivory Floral Medallion | Signed Cartouche

This is the ivory version of the design that made Persian Kashan rugs the standard for a formal room: a lobed central medallion, four matching corner spandrels, and a field of curling vinework drawn small enough that you keep finding new flowers in it. The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation at a 3/8" clip, the condition is excellent with even pile from end to end, and the weaver signed the work in a small woven cartouche at the top of the inner border, read as "Shadsar". Design and Motifs

The center holds a stepped, lobed medallion outlined twice in navy, with a small red 8 petal rosette at its heart and a pale blue diamond cradling it. Pendant finials run off the medallion at top and bottom, each one filled with a camel palmette and a red bud, and the same drawing repeats in quarter form across the 4 corners so the layout reads perfectly symmetrical from any side of the room. Around all of that the field carries an allover system of thin arabesque vines, feathery saz leaves, lotus palmettes and small rosettes, tipped in red and gold so the eye has somewhere to land. The main border is an ivory ground scroll of alternating palmettes and cupped blossoms, and it is fenced by narrow guard stripes in navy and camel with a fine reciprocal sawtooth that keeps the outer edge crisp.

A Warm Ivory Ground Drawn in Blues

The ground is a warm, slightly creamy ivory rather than a cold white, which is what keeps this piece easy to live with next to oak floors, walnut furniture or a linen sofa. The drawing sits on top of it in three separate blues: a deep navy for the outlines and medallion frame, a mid denim blue for the larger palmettes, and a soft powder blue that fills the smaller flowers and the medallion center. Camel and old gold carry the vine work, walnut brown shades the leaves and gives the pattern depth, and small strikes of tomato red and ochre appear in the flower centers, maybe 2 percent of the surface but enough to warm the whole field. Woven in Kashan, Central Persia

Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan and has been a weaving city since the Safavid court workshops of the 16th century. The town is known for soft, lustrous local wool and for a disciplined city weave: cotton warps depressed by a double weft, a dense knot count, and a short clip that lets fine curved drawing survive. You can see that structure on the back of this rug, where the knot rows are straight and tight and the pattern reads almost as clearly as it does on the front. Kashan is also the most recognizable Persian rug in America, the one you see on the floor when you watch Shark Tank. A woven signature raises the piece above anonymous village work, since the weaver put a name on it and had to answer for the result.
