8'2" x 11'6" Persian Ardakan Rug | Ivory Field, Blue Floral Medallion | Signed Cartouche

Ardakan weavers built their reputation on drawing the classical central Persian repertoire properly, and this 8'2" x 11'6" piece shows why the town is taken seriously. The ground is ivory, worked corner to corner with fine floral vinery, and it is held together by a lobed medallion with matching pendants and four spandrels. A signed cartouche is woven into the end border, which on a rug of this drawing means a workshop piece rather than an anonymous village weave. The pile is a low, even 3/8" wool that keeps every stem and blossom legible instead of blurring it, and the overall effect reads light and calm from across a room. Design and Motifs

At the center is a stepped, lobed medallion built in layers: a small red square core, an 8 petal rosette in pale green and soft blue around it, then a scalloped navy outline and a second outer lobe filled with small blossoms and curling leaves. Slim pendant finials run off the medallion at top and bottom, ending in little palmette heads. The field around it is a true all over composition, not filler, with serrated saz leaves, rounded palmettes, tiny 6 petal rosettes and spiralling vine that changes direction rather than simply repeating. The 4 corner spandrels are drawn more densely, their navy outlines giving the field a clean frame. The main border alternates broad palmettes with cusped floral cartouches on ivory, and it is bracketed by narrow guard stripes carrying a running vine and a fine barber pole outer edge, which is exactly the kind of detail work that separates a workshop rug from a quick weave.

A Pistachio, Blue and Ivory Palette

The base is ivory, warm rather than stark, with a faint cream shift where the pile catches light. Everything drawn on it is blue, and the blue works in at least 3 registers: deep navy for outlines and leaf bodies, a mid denim tone for the larger palmettes, and a pale powder blue that fills petals and softens the whole field. Pistachio green appears where it matters most, in the medallion petals, in scattered leaf tips and in a handful of blossoms through the field, and it is what keeps the rug from reading as a plain blue and white piece. Small accents carry the rest: clear red dots at flower centers and the single red square at the medallion core, camel and ochre browns in the border palmettes, chocolate brown in the vine work, and a touch of soft yellow. In daylight the rug is bright and airy; under lamps the navy comes forward and the ivory turns closer to cream.

Ardakan Weaving in Central Persia

Ardakan lies in central Persia, in the desert country north of Yazd, and its looms work in the same idiom as Persian Kashan rugs: a curved, flowing line, a formal medallion and spandrel layout, and a border that is drawn rather than stamped. The wool from this region is springy and takes dye cleanly, which is why the pale blues and the pistachio here stay distinct instead of muddying into each other. The rug is knotted on a cotton foundation, the standard for town weaving of this type, and the knot count visible on the reverse is fine enough to carry the small rosettes and the thin vine without breaking them into steps. The end border signature is the maker putting his name to the loom, and on Ardakan work it is a reliable marker of the better production rather than a decorative flourish.
