8'1" x 9'8" Oriental Rug | Transitional All Over Design | Gray Field & Ivory Border, Brand New

This 8'1" x 9'8" rug is brand new, hand-knotted one knot at a time in wool on a cotton foundation, and it has never been on a floor. It reads as a quiet, modern piece from across the room and as a traditional one up close: a soft gray field carrying an all over lattice of ivory, pumpkin and pale blue medallions, framed by a generous ivory border and slim pumpkin guard stripes. The pile is clipped at a medium height that keeps the drawing crisp while still feeling substantial underfoot, and the wool has the faint natural sheen you only get from a hand-spun, hand-knotted weave. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, and at just over 8 by 10 feet it sits squarely in the most useful size class we sell, alongside our other 8x10 Oriental rugs.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the field is built as a repeating diagonal lattice, the classic all over design, with two alternating units: a lobed quatrefoil rosette and a stepped diamond cartouche, each one filled with a small 8 petal flower head or a cross-form palmette. Curling ivory vines link the units corner to corner so the eye travels across the rug rather than settling in one spot, and tiny detached leaves and buds fill the gray ground between them. The main ivory border repeats a rounded rosette flanked by broad olive palmettes and an angular diamond boss, turning cleanly at all 4 corners, and it is contained by pumpkin guard bands carrying a running vine of small squared flowers. Close inspection of the border shows the fine outlining in rust and brown that gives every motif a drawn edge, the kind of detail that separates a real hand-knotted weave from a printed or machine-made copy.

A Soft Gray Ground Warmed by Pumpkin and Ivory

The field is a muted gray with a faint lavender cast, not a cold charcoal, and it shifts slightly with the light thanks to the natural variation in the hand-spun wool. Against it the palette is deliberately warm: pumpkin and apricot orange in the rosette centers and the guard stripes, buttery ivory and cream in the vines and the wide main border, olive and walnut brown in the leaf forms, and small touches of dusty pink and soft sky blue inside the medallions. The blue is the surprise, cool enough to pick up the gray ground while the orange pulls the whole rug warm again. Nothing shouts. The overall effect is a neutral, low-contrast piece that works with oak, walnut, linen and off-white walls, while the pumpkin accents give it enough color to stand on its own rather than disappear into the floor.

Hand-Knotted in Pakistan: Weave and Quality

Pakistan is one of the few places still producing serious hand-knotted work at scale, and its weaving centers have spent decades refining transitional patterns of exactly this kind, drawn from older village traditions but recolored for contemporary rooms. This piece is knotted on a cotton warp and weft with a wool pile, the same construction used for durable room-size weaving for well over a century, and the back shows even rows, straight sides and clean corner resolution throughout. The selvages are wrapped in gray and the ends finish in a short natural fringe that is a continuation of the warps, not sewn on. Because the wool is hand-spun and the dyes are absorbed unevenly by design, the field carries gentle abrash, a soft horizontal variation in tone that no machine can imitate. Perfect condition, never used, and ready to lay flat.
