8'10" x 12' Sumak Flat Weave Oriental Rug | Light Green Soozani Floral Design | Brand New, Never Used

This 8'10" x 12' piece is a hand-knotted flat weave in the Sumak Soozani idiom, which means the drawing stays graphic and the surface stays low, closer to a tapestry than to a plush pile. The field is a soft sage green filled edge to edge with an all over floral trellis, framed by a wide camel brown border of ivory palmettes and finished with narrow green and beige guard bands. Because the pile sits low and even, it slides under furniture legs, takes a dining chair without catching and reads as one calm plane of color across a room, which is what buyers of 9x12 Oriental rugs are usually after. It is brand new, never used, in perfect condition, and ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool pile and the cotton foundation.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first overhead photograph was taken under bright studio lighting, so the field there reads as a clearer, cooler green. The remaining photographs were shot on our warehouse floor in daylight and show the softer sage and celadon tone you will actually see at home. Nothing has been faded, washed down or altered, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classical all over floral scheme rather than a single medallion. A thin vine scrolls through the green ground, throwing off serrated leaves, split palmettes and ivory blossoms, and down the central axis sit 4 coral 8 petal rosettes, 2 on the long axis and 2 set to the sides, which gives the eye a quiet rhythm without ever locking the pattern into one center. The main border is the real showpiece: large ivory and cream palmettes alternating with green lotus forms on a camel brown ground, each shape outlined in a fine coral line that keeps the drawing crisp at a distance. Inside and outside that border run 4 minor bands, a cartouche style green stripe with coral quatrefoils, a beige vine band and a plain green outer edge, so the frame steps down gradually to the selvage. Detail photographs show the outlining clearly, and the flat weave allows that fine linework to stay legible where a deeper pile would blur it.

A Study in Sage Green, Camel and Coral

Color is the reason this rug works in rooms where a red or navy ground would fight the furniture. The field is a muted sage, closer to celadon and dried pistachio than to a true emerald, and it shifts gently with the light and with the direction of the weave. Against it the border is a warm camel brown, tan where the light hits and almost tobacco in the shadow of a fold. The pattern itself is drawn in beige and ivory wool with soft taupe and charcoal grey shading inside the leaves and palmettes, so the florals have depth instead of sitting flat. Coral is the one accent that raises its voice: it appears in the rosettes on the field, in the outlines of the border blossoms and in the small quatrefoils of the guard stripes, reading salmon in daylight and closer to terracotta in the close-up photographs. The selvage and the outer edge finish in green, and the fringe is natural undyed cotton. The whole palette stays in the earth tone family, which makes it forgiving on both warm wood and cool grey floors.

Woven in India in the Sumak Tradition

This rug is made in India, and that is a recommendation rather than a disclaimer: India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, with workshops weaving to standards and in designs that collectors once had to source elsewhere. The Sumak Soozani drawing here comes out of the old flat weave vocabulary of the region, reinterpreted at room size on a cotton foundation with handspun wool. You can see the quality in the back shot: straight, even rows, a firm handle, a consistent flat surface with no ridges or waves, and a selvage wrapped tightly enough to hold up under traffic. For anyone comparing this against a village or workshop piece from Persia, our guide on what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains exactly where the two traditions part company, and why a well woven Indian flat weave like this one buys you a far larger rug for the money. It sits comfortably alongside our modern and contemporary selection while keeping a traditional floral face.
