8'2" x 10'4" Indian Wool and Silk Rug | All-Over Floral on Dark Brown | Brand New, Never Used
This 8'2" x 10'4" hand-knotted rug is one of the better pieces of contemporary workshop weaving to come through our hands this season: a dense, finely drawn floral field in chocolate brown, woven in wool with silk accents on a cotton foundation. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, so the pile still stands up full and the silk catches light the way it was meant to. The drawing is close and disciplined, with fine vine work and small secondary blossoms packed between the larger palmettes, which only holds together at a high knot count. At roughly 85 square feet it sits squarely in the 8x10 area rug range that anchors most sofa-and-chairs arrangements, and as with every piece we sell it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. Instead the field carries a true all-over floral design, built on a lattice of thin gold vines that arch, cross and rejoin across the whole 10'4" length. Large round rosettes sit at the lattice junctions, each one drawn with 3 or 4 concentric rings of petals and a tiny contrasting center. Between them sit fan-shaped lotus palmettes, split leaves, serrated acanthus forms and upright flower vases, with scatterings of 5 petal blossoms and crosslets filling the ground so there is almost no bare brown left. The field is framed by a narrow gold leaf stripe, then a wide ivory main border of curling vines carrying pomegranate buds, cypress-leaf forms and red and blue star flowers, then a second gold outer band of alternating leaves. A dark brown selvage and ivory cotton fringe close the ends. The repeat is handled well: the pattern reads as continuous rather than stamped, and the 4 corners resolve cleanly where border and field meet.
A Deep Brown Field With Ivory, Gold and Jewel Accents
The ground is a dark chocolate brown that shifts with the light, reading almost espresso in the overhead photographs and warming toward coffee and walnut in the angled shots, which is the natural abrash of a hand-dyed wool pile. Against it, the vine work is a soft antique gold and the larger rosettes come up in blush pink, camel, sand and oyster ivory, with the silk highlights giving the petal edges a wet sheen. The accent palette is small and well judged: deep olive and forest green in the leaves, rust and terracotta in the buds, burgundy and dark red in the small star flowers, and occasional slate blue and teal dots that keep the warm tones honest. The wide main border swaps the balance, placing the same motifs on a pale ivory to blush cream ground so the brown center reads as a deliberate dark panel rather than a heavy block. Buyers hunting for brown area rugs that still carry light will see why this one works over pale oak, limestone or grey tile.
Made in India: Workshop Weaving and Knot Quality
This rug was made in India, where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and we say that with confidence rather than apology. The northern Indian workshops have spent 3 decades refining classical floral drawing, and the result is visible on the back of this piece: small, even, tightly packed knots, straight rows, no slippage in the vine lines and a fine cotton warp that keeps the rug flat and square. The pile is clipped low, which is what lets the detail survive, and the silk is used sparingly as highlight rather than as filler, so the rug still wears like a wool rug underfoot. Fold the corner over and you can see how dense the knotting is, with no loose foundation and a heavy, solid hand for a rug of this size. It is new, unused and in perfect condition, ready to go straight into a living room, formal dining room or study.
