8'2" x 11'7" Persian Kashan Rug | Navy Blue Field with Green Medallion | Vintage Wool

This is the quieter, older-looking side of Kashan weaving: a deep navy blue field instead of the usual red, and a medallion drawn in soft sage green rather than ivory. The wool has taken on the gentle golden patina that only comes with age, and the pile is still even and full across all 8'2" x 11'7", with clean selvedges and original ivory fringe at both ends. It is a room-size piece for a formal space, dense enough to lie flat without pulling, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted wool construction and Persian origin. Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Kashan formula: a lobed central medallion with a pendant at each end, matching quarter medallions in the 4 corners, and an allover field of curving vine, palmettes and small serrated leaves that never repeats awkwardly. At the exact center sits an 8 petal rosette in navy, ringed by paired tendrils and tiny cloudband scrolls that you can only read up close. The main border carries alternating rosettes and cartouche-shaped floral panels, framed by narrow guard stripes of running vine. Notice the spandrels: they are filled with the same green as the medallion, which pulls the eye diagonally across the rug and gives the composition depth it would not have in a single-color corner.

Color: Navy Blue, Sage Green, Rust and Salmon

The ground is a true navy blue, nearly black in low light and clearly blue under a lamp or in daylight, which is what the floor photographs show. Against it the vinework is worked in warm salmon and soft gold, with small accents of rust and deep red placed at flower centers so the field reads as living pattern rather than a flat mass. The medallion, the spandrels and one of the guard stripes share a muted sage green that has softened toward olive with age, and the main border runs in a dusty salmon that cools to ivory at the outer edge. It is an unusually restrained palette for a Kashan and it sits easily with walnut and oak floors, cream walls, navy upholstery and brass.

Kashan: Central Persia and the Weave

Kashan lies in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for curvilinear floral design. Local wool is soft and lustrous, which is why Kashan pile takes on a low sheen as it ages instead of going dull. The back of this rug shows a fine, regular knot line on a cotton foundation, with straight rows and no crowding at the ends, the mark of a workshop weaver who kept tension even over more than 11 feet of warp.
