8'2" x 9'5" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Pale Pastel All Over Floral | Fine Hand-Spun Wool, Brand New
This is a brand new, never used 8'2" x 9'5" Chobi Peshawar piece, hand-knotted in fine hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation and finished in the palest range of the Chobi palette. Laid flat it reads almost like an old washed heirloom: the field has settled into a quiet sand beige, the drawing is soft rather than crisp, and the whole surface carries the gentle abrash you only get from small-batch dyed, hand-spun yarn. It measures just over 8 feet by just over 9 feet, which sits comfortably under a sofa grouping or a 6 chair table without crowding the walls, and the low, even pile means it tucks neatly under doors and furniture legs. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, along with its exact measurements, material and origin.
Design and Motifs
The field is a classic all over floral layout with no central medallion, built on a repeating lattice of large open rosettes, split palmettes and small serrated leaf sprays that step evenly across the surface in staggered rows. Look closely at the center detail and you can see how each rosette is drawn twice, once as an ivory outline and once as a filled form, so the pattern reads as layers rather than a flat repeat. Thin vine stems connect the motifs and carry tiny 4 and 5 petal blossoms between them. The main border is wide and generous, roughly a fifth of the rug's width on each side, filled with a continuous scrolling vine of ivory palmettes and curling leaves, with the corners resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid motif. Two narrow guard stripes of small connected flowerheads frame it on both sides, and the ends finish in short natural fringe as seen in the angled photographs.
A Study in Pale Pastels
The color is the whole point of this rug. The ground moves between pale sand, warm camel and a dusty wheat tone, shifting in soft horizontal bands as the light crosses it, while the motifs are picked out in bone ivory and a slightly deeper biscuit. The main border steps up into a muted taupe greige that is just dark enough to hold the composition together without ever reading as brown, and the guard stripes come back to cream. Scattered through the field are small accents in a chalky blue grey, concentrated in a few of the rosette centers and leaf tips, and those cool points are what keep the rug from going flat. There is no black, no red and nothing saturated anywhere in it, so it works as a quiet neutral floor in rooms built around beige and ivory rugs, linen upholstery, oak and pale plaster walls.
Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan
Chobi weaving is centered on Peshawar in northern Pakistan, where workshops staffed largely by Afghan weaving families produce some of the most consistent hand-knotted work being made today. The name Chobi refers to wood, a nod to the plant and wood based dye tradition the style is built on, and the pale washed look here comes from that softer dye approach rather than from any chemical stripping. The yarn is fine hand-spun wool, which takes dye unevenly on purpose and gives the field its subtle banding, and the pile is clipped low so the drawing stays legible. The ruler photograph shows the back side knotting at close range: a tight, regular, well packed weave with straight rows and no pulling at the sides, which is what you want to see in a new piece of this size. As an Oriental rug rather than a village antique, it arrives with full pile and decades of life still in front of it.
