8'2" x 10'3" Ziegler Chobi Peshawar Rug | Aqua Blue All Over Floral | Brand New Natural Wool

This is a brand new, never used Ziegler Chobi Peshawar rug, hand-knotted entirely by hand in natural wool on a cotton foundation and finished in the soft, slightly faded register that collectors look for in this group. The field is a clear aqua blue carrying a continuous floral repeat, and it is held inside a wide sand beige main border with two narrow guard stripes. At 8 feet 2 inches by 10 feet 3 inches it covers a seating group or a table without crowding the walls, which makes it one of the easiest proportions to place among 8x10 Oriental rugs. Every piece we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity stating the weave, the material and the origin.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Ziegler all over design, with no central medallion to anchor the eye. Instead, large fan shaped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and lobed blossoms sit on a loose lattice of curling vines and long serrated leaves that runs off the field and under the border, so the pattern reads as a fragment of something larger. The repeat is drawn generously rather than densely, leaving real open ground between the flowerheads, and every motif is outlined in chocolate brown so the shapes stay legible from standing height. The wide main border repeats a measured line of palmette cartouches and pendant rosettes, each corner resolved cleanly, while the inner and outer guard stripes carry a small turquoise and rust vine that frames the whole composition.

A Detailed Look at the Colors

The field is an aqua blue that sits between sky and teal, moving in gentle horizontal bands of abrash where one dye lot of hand-spun wool gave way to the next, which is exactly what gives the ground its depth in the close-up photographs. Against it the flowerheads run through wheat gold, soft apricot, sand beige and a pale ivory that almost glows where the pile catches light, with rust and coral used sparingly for the small inner petals and vine tips. Sage green appears in the occasional rosette center, and chocolate brown does the outlining and the leaf work. The border is a quieter wheat to sand beige, cooled by turquoise vinework, and the outer edge is finished in the same aqua blue as the field, ending in a hand-tied ivory fringe.

Origin, Weaving Town and Quality

This rug was made in Pakistan, in the Peshawar weaving region that has become the main source of fine hand-knotted Chobi Ziegler work over the last 40 years. Chobi means wood colored, a reference to the muted, earth toned palette these workshops build their reputation on, and the Ziegler name comes from the 19th century firm that first commissioned this kind of open floral drawing for Western rooms. Peshawar weavers use hand-spun, hand-carded wool and a soft wash that settles the colors without flattening the pile, then clip the surface low and even, which is visible in the folded corner and selvage photographs here. The result is a durable, honestly made Oriental rug with tight, straight edges and a flat, true shape ready to lay.
