This is an odd size in the best sense: 8'2" x 15'8" is longer than a standard 9x12 by more than 3 feet while staying narrow enough to sit cleanly between two walls, which makes it a problem solver for long living rooms, galleries and open plan spaces where ordinary large hand-knotted wool rugs stop short. It is hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton foundation, brand new and never used, with a soft antique-style wash that has already given the pile the low sheen and gentle color break of an older piece. Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the Ziegler formula: a generous all-over floral design built from oversized palmettes, serrated leaves and curling vine scrolls, loosely anchored by a single lobed medallion at the center of the field. The medallion is a cream cartouche filled with small tulips, rosettes and a fine 8 petal flower at its heart, drawn in thin dark outline rather than heavy contrast. Around it the field carries rows of large rounded rosettes and spiky feathered leaf forms, with cross-shaped blossoms and star flowers filling the spaces between. The main border is a wide black band of arching leaves and flowering rosettes, flanked on both sides by beige guard borders of small repeating vine and bud motifs, and the whole thing is finished with a plain rust outer edge that frames the pattern without adding noise.

A Muted Rust Field Against Black and Ivory

The field is a soft, dusty rust with a rose cast, the kind of terracotta that photographs warm in daylight and reads closer to a muted clay or old brick under lamplight. It is not a saturated red, which is exactly why the rug sits so easily with oak floors, walnut furniture and stone. Against that ground the motifs are worked in cream and pale beige, with quiet sage green shading inside the palmettes and leaves and small touches of rose pink in the flower centers. The black main border is the anchor, deep and near-charcoal in the weave, and its ivory vinework gives the rug a crisp outline from across a room. Subtle abrash, the natural tonal variation of hand-dyed wool, moves across the field in soft bands and is a sign of the dye lot, not a flaw.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is where the Chobi and Ziegler tradition is woven today, by workshops that use handspun wool, soft natural-toned dyes and the 19th century Sultanabad style cartoons the Ziegler firm originally commissioned. The weavers there build a heavier, slightly longer pile than a fine city weave, which is the right choice for a rug of this length: it wears well underfoot, holds its shape across nearly 16 feet, and lies flat without buckling. The back shows even, regular knotting and tight selvedges, and the wool has the natural lanolin luster you can see in the close-up photographs.
