8' x 9'8" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Charcoal Black Ziegler All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool

At 8' x 9'8", this Chobi Peshawar is the kind of hand-knotted Oriental rug that looks close to solid black from the doorway and then opens up completely once you step onto it. The field is a dense charcoal black carrying a tan vine scroll from end to end, and a wide beige border holds the whole thing in place. Because the wool is hand-spun, it takes light unevenly, which is exactly why the palmettes seem to glow against the dark ground. It is new, never used and in perfect condition, sitting right in the 8x10 Oriental rugs footprint most living and dining rooms are planned around, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The drawing is a true all-over floral design, mirrored down the vertical axis so that large lobed palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and serrated acanthus leaves repeat in ordered rows while the connecting vine keeps curving between them. Small round rosette discs punctuate the field at regular intervals, each one drawn with a tiny contrasting center. The border system is three deep: a broad main band carrying a leafy meander with cartouche-like rosettes at the center of each side, flanked by narrow guard stripes of linked buds, and finished by a dark outer edge that reads as a clean drawn line around the rug. Ivory cotton fringe closes both ends.

Charcoal Black Field, Tan Vines and an Ivory Border

Black is the main color, and it is not a flat black: in the pile-level photographs the ground shows a smoky green-charcoal undertone with gentle horizontal abrash, the natural signature of hand-spun wool and vegetal dyeing. Over it, the vine and palmettes run through camel, tan and a warm apricot, with taupe shading inside the larger blossoms. The wide border shifts to beige and soft ivory, lighter at the outer edge and warmer where it meets the field, and that is where the quiet accents live: muted rose in the flower heads, sage green and faded teal in the small leaves and tendrils, with occasional black outlining for definition. If you are shopping black and ivory Oriental rugs, this is the warm, low-contrast version rather than a hard graphic one.

Peshawar Weaving and Chobi Quality

Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is where the Chobi weaving tradition is centered. Chobi refers to the wood-and-plant dye palette these looms work in, which is why the colors sit soft and slightly sun-washed from the day the rug comes off the loom. The weavers follow the Ziegler style of drawing, the large-scale all-over floral layout 19th century European firms commissioned specifically for Western rooms, and they weave it the old way: hand-spun wool knotted onto a cotton foundation, clipped to a medium pile, then washed to open the luster. The back shown in the photographs is even and tight, the selvages are firm, and the wool has the body that makes hand-knotted Oriental rugs like this one hold up under real traffic for decades.
