8'5" x 12'6" Persian Kerman Rug | Semi-Antique All-Over Floral | Sage-Beige Field

A semi-antique Kerman in a quiet, decorator-friendly palette: a soft beige field with a faint sage cast, drawn edge to edge with blossoms, scrolling leaves and small rosettes. The pile is hand-knotted wool at a full 3/8", still even and dense across all 150 inches of length, and the rug has come down to us in excellent condition with no repairs or reweaves to disclose. At 8'5" x 12'6" it is one of the genuinely usable large Persian rugs, wide enough to carry a sofa group without crowding the walls. Every rug we ship travels with our certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

This is an all-over floral design rather than a single dominant medallion. The center is marked only by a small rayed rosette, from which pairs of curling acanthus leaves sweep outward like open brackets, each one framing a cluster of blue palmettes and star blossoms. Between them sit flowering vases and tiny tiered urns, a detail the Kerman draughtsmen used to anchor the repeat without interrupting it. The main border is the showpiece: a continuous ribbon of cabbage roses and full ivory blooms set inside interlocking vine cartouches, with coral rays fanning out behind each flower head. Look closely at the border in the detail photographs and a small bird appears, perched among leaves, drawn with the same light hand as the flowers. The field is curvilinear throughout, with no angular drawing anywhere in the composition.

The Color: Sage-Tinted Beige With Sky Blue and Coral

The ground reads as a warm beige that shifts toward tan brown and soft sage depending on how the light falls across the pile, which is why the rug photographs cooler in the angled shots and warmer in the close-ups. Over that neutral, the drawing is carried almost entirely by blue: sky blue and powder blue in the palmettes and leaf tips, deepening to navy in the small star flowers and in the outlines that give each motif its edge. Coral and brick rust supply the warmth, in the rose centers and the fanned rays of the border, while ivory and pale cream handle the largest blooms and the vine cartouches, along with touches of celadon and apricot. The combination makes it an easy rug to place, closer in feeling to beige and ivory Persian rugs than to the red-ground classics, with no single color loud enough to dictate the rest of the room.

Kerman: Weaving Town and Weave Quality

Kerman lies in the southeast of Persia, far from the northwest village centers, and its workshops built their name on drawing rather than on geometry. The pictorial, garden-style border is the Kerman signature, and holding a curved vine through more than 12 feet of length without the repeat drifting takes a cartoon drawn by a professional designer and weavers trained to follow it. The weave here is a city weave on a cotton foundation, single-wefted in the Kerman manner, with knot rows fine enough that the small floral heads keep their shape instead of blurring. The reverse photograph shows that clearly: a tight, flat, legible back where the full pattern is readable from the underside, which is always the honest test of a workshop piece. Among the Persian Kerman rugs we handle, the softly colored semi-antique examples in this size are the ones that leave first.
