8'6" x 11'7" Oriental Rug | Transitional Khotan-Style Lattice | Hand-Knotted Wool, Made in India

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted wool piece drawn in the old Khotan manner: a quiet lattice of linked cloudband panels running wall to wall, framed by a double Greek key border. At 8'6" x 11'7" it falls into the standard 9x12 Oriental rugs class, which is the size most dining rooms and full seating groups are planned around. The drawing is deliberately restrained and the palette is soft, so it reads as a calm floor rather than a statement medallion, and that is exactly why this kind of transitional Oriental rug works under both antique furniture and clean contemporary pieces. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, with the size, materials and origin recorded.

Design and Motifs

The field is built on a diagonal grid of diamond panels, each one closed by 4 inward-curling scrolls that meet at the corners, with an 8 petal rosette or a small 8 point star set at every junction. Half the panels are drawn in ivory, half in gold, and the alternation gives the lattice a quiet checkerboard rhythm across the full 11'7" length. Smaller square cartouches filled with rust floral sprays sit between the larger panels, so the eye keeps finding a second layer of pattern. The border system is the piece's signature: an ivory main band carrying large rosettes on a diagonal vine with small leaf buds, flanked on both sides by Greek key meander guards and a narrow sage minor stripe. The outer edge finishes in solid gold brown, and the ends are closed with plain cotton fringe.

Color: Soft Blue, Gold and Rust

The ground is a pale blue grey with a faint green cast, a cool and dusty tone that photographs lighter than most Oriental fields and keeps a large room from feeling heavy. Over it the lattice is worked in warm honey gold and a slightly deeper caramel, with rosette centers in rust and burnt sienna that supply the only strong accents in the rug. Ivory does the structural work, outlining the panels and holding the wide main border, while a muted sage green runs through the guard stripes and leaf tips. Browns appear in the outer edge and in the darker rosette rings. The closeups show light striation in the wool, so the gold and blue read differently as you walk around the rug, which is normal for hand-spun style yarn and keeps the large expanse of field alive.

Hand-Knotted in India

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted rugs are now made, and this piece is a fair example of what the better workshops there produce: knot by knot on a cotton warp, no tufting, no backing glue. The fold shown in the photographs reveals a tight, even back with the pattern legible from the reverse, straight selvedges and square corners, all signs of a well-dressed loom and disciplined weavers. The wool is clipped at a medium pile height that holds the fine outlines of the scroll work while still giving a soft, dense hand underfoot. Perfect condition, never laid, with full pile and clean ivory fringe at both ends.
