8'10" x 12'2" Oriental Rug | Transitional Rosette Grid | Natural Wool, Made in India

Laid flat at 8'10" x 12'2", this hand-knotted wool rug makes one clear statement: a burnt sienna ground with a grid of golden rosettes drifting across the center panel like a length of old block-printed cloth. It is brand new and never used, with a substantial natural wool pile and the supple, even handle you can see in the turned-back corner photographs. Because the field is left open on all 4 sides rather than closed by a formal border, it behaves in a room more like a wide swath of fabric than a framed medallion piece, which is exactly why this kind of Oriental rug sits so easily under contemporary furniture. It falls squarely into the 9x12 rugs footprint, the most useful large format in American homes, and ships with a certificate of authenticity recording the weave, materials and origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The soft diagonal lines and shadows visible across the first photograph are fold marks from flat pallet storage, caught by the studio lighting. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. Folds of this kind relax once the rug is laid flat in a room, and every rug leaving our Freeport warehouse is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is an all-over design built from a single repeating unit: a large ringed rosette, each one an 8 petal flower set inside a scalloped disc with a small rose colored button at the very center. The rosettes sit in staggered rows and are joined by serrated leaves and thin climbing stems, so the grid reads as a trellis of blossoms rather than a stamped repeat. The close-up frames show how the designer varied the leaves, with some turning back on themselves and others running straight into the next flower, which keeps the long diagonal lines of the lattice from going stiff across 12 feet of length. The motif belongs to the old Agra workshop vocabulary, drawn here in a transitional register: the flowers are simplified, the vine work is sparse, and the panel of pattern floats inside a wide plain surround with no border bands, no corner spandrels and no medallion to compete with it.

A Burnt Sienna Ground With Honey Gold Blossoms

The ground is a deep burnt sienna, closer to terracotta and brick than to a true blue-red, and it moves. Across the open field the tone shifts in fine horizontal striations from a dark oxblood rust along one edge to a brighter copper orange where the light hits, the natural abrash of hand-spun wool taking dye at slightly different rates. Against that, the blossoms are honey gold and camel, with the inner petals lifting to a pale ivory and the center buttons picked out in a muted dusty rose. The leaves and stems carry a quieter olive brown outline that keeps each flower legible against the red. The ends finish in natural ivory fringe, which brightens the whole piece where it meets the floor. For buyers assembling a warm scheme, it belongs with the best rust and orange rugs, and it is particularly good over grey tile, concrete or dark walnut.

Hand-Knotted in India

This rug was made in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and we say that with confidence rather than apology. The weaving centers of northern India inherited the Mughal court tradition and the Agra workshop repertoire, and today they combine that design library with hand-spun wool and skilled loom work at a scale no other country matches. The back photograph shows an even, regular knot line with no pulling and no crowding at the selvedges, the mark of a weaver working a well-tensioned loom rather than rushing a commercial order. Pile depth is generous, so the rug feels plush underfoot and will hold up in a main living space for decades. If you are shopping the broader field of modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs, this one sits in the uncommon middle ground: traditional drawing, modern restraint, and a format of 8'10" x 12'2" that works in a real room.
