8'9" x 11'7" Agra Oriental Rug | Green & Rust Khotan-Style Lattice | Brand New, Made in India

This is a brand new, never used Agra weave measuring 8'9" x 11'7", hand-knotted in India in natural wool on a cotton foundation. The drawing looks back to the old Khotan and Samarkand tile carpets, an all over grid of interlocking diamonds and scrolling cloud hooks, framed by a wide ivory band of rosettes and two running Greek key guards. It reads as a quiet, architectural Oriental rug rather than a busy floral one, which is exactly why it works under contemporary furniture as easily as under antiques. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the selvedges are tight, and the fringes are original to the weave. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, along with the full measurements and material description.

Design and Motifs

The field is built as a continuous all over lattice, with no medallion and no single focal point, so the rug can be turned or shifted without upsetting the composition. Each diamond compartment holds a pair of mirrored cloud scrolls curling in toward a small 8 petal rosette, and the diamonds alternate with squared tiles carrying star flowers and serrated leaf tips. The repeat is close and disciplined: the weaver has kept the hook curves consistent across the entire 11'7" length, which is harder than it looks on a design with this many small elements. The main border sets large rosettes on a diagonal vine of tiny leaves and bird-like sprigs, and it is bracketed inside and out by narrow Greek key meanders, a motif borrowed straight from the East Turkestan tradition. Corners resolve cleanly at all 4 turns, with the key band mitering properly instead of running off the edge.

Colors: Sage Green, Rust and Warm Beige

The palette is soft and slightly dusty rather than saturated. The ground alternates between warm beige and pale camel, and the compartments are filled with two distinct greens, a grey-leaning sage and a deeper olive, set against a copper rust that ranges from terracotta to a burnt orange depending on the light. Teal blue outlines the star flowers and the Greek key bands, giving the whole surface a cool edge that keeps the rust from dominating. Dark chocolate brown appears only in small doses, at the centers of some rosettes and in the fine outlines, and ivory highlights lift the leaf tips and petal centers. Seen from the ends the greens and rusts shift slightly with the nap, an abrash-like movement that is normal in a natural wool pile and reads as depth rather than variation. Overall this is a neutral rug with color in it, comfortable with wood, brass, greenery and off-white walls.

Agra Weaving and Modern Indian Hand-Knotting

Agra has been a carpet weaving center since the Mughal court workshops, and the city's modern ateliers still produce some of the best hand-knotted work being made anywhere today. This piece is a good example of why: a cotton warp and weft beaten straight, a firm and even knot count across the width, and a hard-wearing natural wool pile clipped low enough to hold the fine outlines in the Greek key. The back, shown in the detail photos, is clear and legible, with the design visible knot for knot, which is the first thing to check on any handmade rug. At 8'9" x 11'7" it sits in the most useful room size there is, covering the seating area of a standard living room or letting all chairs stay on the rug at a dining table, and it belongs with our 9x12 area rugs. Never used, with full pile and no repairs.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
