Design and Motifs

The field is a true all over design: a slow, thick vine scroll swings across the ivory ground and hangs large serrated palmettes, split leaves and 8 petal rosettes from it in mirrored pairs. Look closely at the drawing and you can read the hierarchy the Agra weavers worked to. Big dark-outlined palmettes with jagged edges set the rhythm, camel rosettes with crimson centers fill the openings between them, and tiny 4 petal buds and curling tendrils close the last gaps so that no area of bare ivory ever reads as empty. Each corner of the field repeats the same cluster, which is how the pattern stays symmetrical across 14 feet of length. The main border carries a connected chain of rounded flower heads and reversing leaves, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of small rosettes on a lighter ground, and the whole border is edged in a fine burgundy outline that keeps the design crisp against the dark green selvage.

A Warm Ivory Palette with Green, Pink and Turquoise

The ground is a warm ivory that leans toward soft sand and champagne under room light, so the rug behaves like a neutral rather than a stark white. Over it the weavers laid two greens: a muted sage and olive used for leaves, vine stems and the border ground, and a deep forest green reserved for the outlines of the largest palmettes and for the selvage, which gives the design its depth. The accent colors are used sparingly and that is what makes them work. Dusty rose pink shades the inner petals of the palmettes and the small hanging blossoms, pale turquoise appears in single leaves and in the eye of certain flower heads, and burgundy shows only as thin outlines and tiny rosette centers. Camel and honey gold tie all of it back to the field.
