9'10" x 14' Agra Rug | Pinkish Red Field with Black Floral Border | Made in India, Brand New
This is a large hand-knotted Agra in the classical Indian workshop manner: a deep pinkish red field carrying a continuous floral lattice, framed by a wide black main border and gold guard stripes. It measures a true room size, so it fills a great room or a long dining space without looking stretched, and it belongs with the 10x14 Oriental rugs most buyers shop when they need full wall-to-wall coverage under furniture. The pile is 3/8" wool over a cotton foundation, the ends are finished with ivory fringe, and the piece is brand new and never used, with the original tag still attached as shown in the last photo. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. The drawing is a true all-over floral composition, built from large serrated palmettes, split leaves, curling vine tendrils and small ivory rosettes that repeat on a mirrored axis down the length of the field. The close-up photo shows how the drawing is organized: a pale ivory and rose rosette sits at the center of each repeat, flanked by two big olive palmettes, with slender stems and tiny black-tipped buds filling the ground between them. The black main border carries its own rhythm of broad leafy palmettes and shield-shaped cartouches, separated by curved arabesque stems, and is bracketed by two narrow gold guard bands of small squared blossoms. Corners are resolved cleanly, which tells you the border was drawn to fit rather than cut to length.
The Pinkish Red and Black Color Story
The field reads as a pinkish red, warmer and more wine-toned than a fire red, with a faint raspberry cast in the pile that shifts lighter or deeper depending on which way the nap is brushed. Against it, the main border is a near-black inky ground that pushes the field forward and makes the rug look framed rather than open. The motifs are worked mostly in sage and olive green with camel gold highlights, softened by ivory outlines and small touches of rose, dusty mauve and charcoal in the leaf tips. That green-on-red pairing is what keeps the rug from feeling heavy: the field is saturated, but the drawing sitting on it is muted and dusty. The guard stripes are a light camel gold, which repeats in the paler leaf work so the whole palette closes on itself.
Agra Weaving and Indian Craftsmanship
The Agra design belongs to the Mughal court workshop tradition of northern India, and the pattern has stayed in continuous production because it works: formal enough for a dining room, quiet enough to live under daily traffic. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece shows why. The back photo shows even, tightly packed knotting across a cotton foundation, with straight rows and no pulling at the selvage, which is what keeps a rug of this width lying flat. The 3/8" wool pile is dense enough to take furniture legs and recover, and the ivory fringe is an extension of the warps rather than a sewn-on finish. If you are weighing this against other origins, our guide on what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains where Agra weaving sits.
