Look at this 8'6" x 11'8" rug the way the weaver intended and you are standing under a domed ceiling looking straight up. The whole field is drawn in perspective, with arched ivory panels radiating out from a star at the apex, and it is one of the hardest classical drawings to execute on a loom because every arch has to converge without a single line wandering. It is hand-knotted in wool with silk worked into the highlights, and the pile carries that quiet two-tone sheen you only get when silk sits next to wool. Design and Motifs

The center holds a 12 point star medallion filled with a dense rosette and vine arrangement, ringed by dark wedge shaped rays that give the star its depth. From there the field opens into tall arched panels, each one outlined in a striped rose and ivory band and filled with scrolling vinework, palmettes, curled acanthus leaves and small birds and flower sprays tucked into the cream ground. Between the arches sit narrow spandrel fields with their own floral cartouches, so no two adjacent panels read exactly alike even though the whole composition is perfectly symmetrical on both axes. The border does its own work: a wide main band of alternating lozenge and hexagonal cartouches, each carrying a rosette or a serrated palmette, separated by small square panels, and framed by striped candy cane minor stripes and a run of rosette guard bands. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a drawing this complex is the first thing an experienced buyer checks.

A Palette Built on Ivory, Sage and Muted Rose

Ivory is the governing color here, and it runs from a clean cream in the arched panels to a warmer sand where the silk catches light. Over that base the drawing is done in dusty rose and soft salmon for the arch bands and the star center, with a grayed sage green filling the border ground and the panel fields around the medallion. Deep burgundy and oxblood provide the weight, concentrated in the star rays and in the large cartouches along the border, while fine charcoal and near black outlines keep every motif crisp against the pale ground. Scattered through the vinework are small touches of slate blue, soft gold and olive on individual flower heads, which is what keeps a largely neutral rug from reading flat. The overall effect is warm and light rather than dark and formal, so it sits comfortably on pale oak, walnut or stone flooring and works with both antique furniture and quieter contemporary rooms.

Made in China, Woven to a Fine Standard

This is an honest Made in China hand-knotted rug, woven on a cotton foundation in the classical Isfahan dome pattern. The back photograph with the ruler laid across it tells you what you need to know about the weave: tight, even rows with small knots, which is why the curved arches and the tiny floral detail hold their shape instead of turning into steps. Fineness is measured in knots per square inch, and a drawing with this much curved line simply cannot be woven at a coarse count. The pile is clipped low so the silk highlights stay visible, the selvedges are firm and the ivory fringe is original and full.
