8'7" x 11'6" Nepal Wool Rug | Modern Transitional Floral Scroll on Soft Green | Brand New
This 8'7" x 11'6" hand-knotted Nepal rug is the kind of piece decorators keep asking for and rarely find in stock: a quiet green field, a thick hand-spun wool pile, and drawing that is loose enough to read as contemporary while the vocabulary of leaves and blossoms stays rooted in classical Oriental rug design. It has never been used, the pile stands full and even from end to end, and the wool has the slight sheen that only good highland fleece and a light wash produce. In a room of 9x12 proportions it covers the full seating group and still leaves the border visible, which is exactly how an all-over field like this should be set. Every rug we ship, including this one, comes with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and construction.
Please Note About the Photographs:
A few of the close-up photographs show faint fold lines and soft shadows across the field from flat storage on the pallet. These are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax once the rug is laid flat in the room, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse. The field also photographs greener in the overhead shots and cooler, closer to teal, under the detail lighting.
Design and Motifs
The layout is an open all-over composition rather than a medallion design, so the eye travels instead of settling on a center. Long gold vines sweep across the field in broad S curves, ending in tight spiral tendrils that are drawn with a single fine outline and left unfilled, a detail you can see clearly in the low-angle close-ups. Off those vines hang large 8 petal rosettes and sunflower-like blossoms with rust and mauve petal centers, feathered acanthus leaves that unfurl like plumes, slender lotus buds, 5 petal florets and small maple-shaped leaves in coral. The scale is deliberately big: a single leaf spray can run 2 feet, which keeps the pattern legible from standing height and stops a rug this size from looking busy. The border is intentionally plain, a wide unornamented band of lighter green with a thin outline, and the vine scroll is allowed to cross from field into border at all 4 corners so the frame never feels bolted on. It is a modern composition built from historical parts, which is what makes it work next to both antique furniture and clean-lined upholstery. Browse more all over rugs if the open field is what drew you here.
Color: Soft Green Ground with Gold, Coral and Ivory
The ground is a muted mid green with a cool cast, somewhere between sage and sea green, and it is not a flat color. Because the wool is hand-spun and hand-dyed in small lots, the field carries a fine vertical striation, a gentle abrash that shifts a shade lighter or deeper as you walk around the rug and gives the surface depth that machine-dyed yarn never achieves. The border reads a half step warmer and lighter, almost olive, so the frame separates from the field without a hard line. Against that green the drawing is worked in warm antique gold and honey amber for the vines and large blossoms, pale ivory and oatmeal for the secondary florets, and a soft brick coral that drops to dusty rose in the leaf veining. Touches of grey green appear in the leaf undersides, which is what keeps the warm tones from turning sweet. There is no black and no bright white anywhere in the palette, so the whole rug sits low and calm in a room. Woven in Nepal: Highland Wool and the Tibetan Knot
Nepal is where the Tibetan weaving tradition settled and modernized, and the workshops of the Kathmandu valley are now among the best sources in the world for hand-knotted transitional work. The knot is the Tibetan loop knot, wrapped continuously around a gauge rod across the warp and then cut, which produces the characteristic even, slightly plush surface you can see in the side-angle and rolled-edge photographs. The wool is highland fleece, carded and spun by hand, which is why the yarn takes dye unevenly in the best possible way and why the pile feels dense and springy underfoot rather than slick. The cotton foundation is tight and straight, the selvages are finished by hand, and the back shown here is clean and regular with no pulls or repairs. This is contemporary production at a high standard, made to be used, and in a 9x12 Persian and Oriental rugs footprint it is a rug that will take years of traffic without thinning.
