8'8" x 11'9" Needlepoint Rug | Black French Garden Design | Flat Weave Wool
A room size 8'8" x 11'9" needlepoint in the French decorative tradition, worked stitch by stitch in wool over a cotton canvas so the surface sits almost flat on the floor. The field is deep black and completely covered with scrolling golden acanthus, fruit and flowers, an all over design with no medallion, which is why it reads as a single tapestry rather than a rug with a center to work around. At this scale it falls squarely into the 9 x 12 area rugs bracket, large enough to carry a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out. It is in perfect condition and ships with our certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first overview image is an older low resolution scan and it renders the colors hotter and grainier than they are in person. The daylight photographs of the field, the border corner and the reverse are the accurate reference for color, drawing and stitch quality.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is pure 18th century French garden work, the vocabulary of Aubusson and Savonnerie panels reinterpreted in needlepoint. Broad acanthus leaves curl and cross the field in long S shaped scrolls, each one splitting into slender tendrils that carry clusters of blue and rose berries, ripe peach colored fruit, hanging grapes and open 5 petal blossoms. Nothing repeats mechanically, the motifs shift as they travel so the eye keeps moving across the whole 11'9" length. A narrow gold guard line separates the field from a black border filled with a continuous garland of leaves, roses, cornflowers and fruit, and the outer band is a plain camel stripe that frames the composition cleanly against a wood floor. Corners are turned by hand, with the garland resolving neatly rather than being cut off, which is a mark of a properly charted design.
Black Ground, Golden Scrolls and Garden Pastels
The ground is a true black, matte and even, and it does the work of a dark gallery wall by throwing every other color forward. Over it the acanthus foliage runs through a graded range of tussock brown, warm gold, wheat and pale cream, shaded leaf by leaf so the scrolls look rounded rather than flat. The flowers supply the cooler notes, dusty rose and soft coral for the roses and berries, powder blue and slate blue for the cornflowers and grape clusters, with muted sage and olive in the smaller leaves and a blush peach in the fruit. The border repeats that same palette at larger scale, and the camel outer band pulls the golden tones back out to the edge. Against dark hardwood the black field grounds the room, while on a pale floor the tan border reads as the frame and the pastels stay bright.
Chinese Needlepoint Workshops and the Quality of the Weave
Fine needlepoint floor work is made in China today by workshops that took over the technique from the old European ateliers and now produce it at a level and a scale Europe no longer attempts. Every stitch is placed by hand in wool across a cotton canvas, so the color changes are governed by the chart rather than by a mechanical repeat, and the shading in the leaves is only possible because the stitch count is high enough to grade 3 or 4 tones within a single acanthus curl. The reverse photograph shows that density clearly, with the pattern legible through the back and a firm ivory selvage finishing the edge. Because there is no pile to crush, this kind of handmade Oriental rug sits flush under doors and furniture legs, holds its drawing under a dining table, and can just as easily be mounted and hung as a tapestry panel.
