Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over lattice of small curling vines and leaf tips, drawn loosely enough that no repeat announces itself from standing height. There is no medallion and no central anchor, which keeps furniture placement free: a sofa, a table or a pair of chairs can sit anywhere on the surface without cutting a design in half. The border does all the talking. Full cabbage roses, open tulips, daisies, small blue forget-me-nots, tight bud clusters and bunches of grapes are massed into continuous bouquets, each swagged into the next by broad green foliage. The garland is widest along the long sides and turns cleanly at the corners rather than being cut off, which is the mark of a properly cartooned needlepoint rather than a shortcut copy.

Color: Black-Brown Ground, Rose Pink and Garden Green

The ground is a deep chocolate brown that reads almost black across the room and only shows its warmth up close, which is what makes the rest of the palette glow. Over it the vine scrolls are worked in warm gold and honey amber, with a few shifting to apricot and soft ochre so the field never goes flat.
