8'8" x 12'4" Persian Kerman Rug | Ivory Field with Black Star Medallion | Excellent Condition

Most Kerman rugs of this scale lean on a red or navy ground to carry the drawing. This one does the opposite: an almost empty ivory field, wide and quiet, with the entire design argument concentrated in a single black-outlined star medallion and a deep, layered border system. At 8'8" x 12'4" it sits squarely in the most useful of all room dimensions, which is why it shows well alongside our other 9x12 Persian rugs, and it arrives in excellent condition with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted piece woven in Persia.

Design and Motifs

The centerpiece is a 16 point star medallion drawn in black arabesque outline, filled with a dense mosaic of small rosettes, curling vine tips and a tiny rose colored flower head at the exact center. Two slender pendants extend from the top and bottom points, each finished with its own miniature palmette crown. Around this, the field is left almost entirely open, which is a confident choice: a weaver only leaves that much undecorated ground when the pile is even enough to be looked at directly. The border system does the rest of the work. A broad camel main band carries paired palmettes, serrated leaves and scrolling arabesques at the corners, flanked by narrow black guard stripes filled with a fine repeating lattice of dots and diamonds, then edged by a rosette vine and a beaded outer stripe. The corner spandrels are drawn as sweeping scroll cartouches rather than solid blocks, so the ivory continues to breathe right out to the selvage.

The Ivory Palette and Its Accents

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than white, with the faint natural variation in the wool that gives handspun pile its depth under daylight. Against it, the palette is restrained and cool: soft turquoise and powder blue in the rosettes and leaf tips, dusty rose and salmon in the flower heads, deep garnet red used sparingly as small punctuation marks along the borders, and camel or biscuit tan through the vine work and the main border ground. Black is the structural color, reserved for the medallion outline and the two narrow guard bands, and it is what keeps the whole design legible from across a room. Kerman workshops traditionally used the asymmetric knot on a cotton foundation with a closely clipped wool pile, and that low, tight clip is exactly what allows the black outline of this medallion to stay crisp and the border lattice to hold its tiny repeat without blurring.
