8'9" x 10'10" Persian Tabriz Rug | Indigo Navy Field, Rose Medallion | Wool Pile, Excellent Condition

This is a room size Tabriz woven in the 2000's, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, and it still carries a full, even pile with the crisp outlines you only get from a rug that has not been walked on for decades. The drawing is confident geometric Tabriz work: one raspberry red medallion anchored on an indigo navy field, ivory corners, and a wide red border carried by green rosettes. At 8'9" x 10'10" it covers a standard seating group with the front legs of the furniture resting on the wool. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and knot construction.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a stepped, lobed medallion in raspberry red with a pale blue cross-shaped inner panel, four small chocolate brown cartouches and a tiny rosette cluster at the exact middle. Pendants run off the medallion at top and bottom, and the navy field around it is filled rather than left open: 8 petal ivory star rosettes, hooked palmettes, cross flowers, slender candle and comb forms, and scattered leaf sprays that give the eye something to follow in every direction. Ivory spandrels close off the 4 corners with flowering vine work and small animal figures drawn in the old village manner. The main border repeats a red ground band of 8 petal green rosettes alternating with ivory and pale green hexagonal cartouches, framed inside and out by pistachio green minor borders of small red and apricot flowerheads. The symmetry is hand drawn rather than mechanical, so no two corners resolve identically, which is exactly what a knotted rug should look like.

A Palette Built on Indigo, Raspberry and Pistachio

The field is a deep indigo that lifts toward violet where the light catches the pile, a shift you can see clearly between the overhead shot and the close-ups, and it makes this one of the more interesting navy and blue Persian rugs we have had in this size. Against it the medallion reads raspberry to cherry red, warmer and pinker than the darker red of the main border, so the two reds separate instead of merging. Ivory does the structural work in the spandrels, the medallion outlines and the star rosettes, while pistachio green runs the guard stripes and the rosette petals and keeps the whole thing from going heavy. Smaller quantities of ochre gold, apricot, soft pink, dark chocolate brown and a light sky blue appear in the fillers. It is a saturated, traditional palette that sits well with wood floors, cream upholstery and burgundy accents.

Tabriz: Weaving Town and Build Quality

Tabriz sits in Azerbaijan province in northwest Persia and has been the organizing center of the Persian rug trade for centuries, producing everything from 70 Raj silk-inlaid masterpieces to robust wool floor rugs like this one. This piece belongs to the geometric workshop tradition rather than the fine curvilinear group: the knotting is firm, the wool is springy highland stock with a healthy sheen, and the back shows regular, tight rows with no slippage at the corners. The selvedges are intact, the ivory cotton fringe is clean and full at both ends, and the handle is substantial without being stiff. If you want the depth of color and the longevity that the best Persian Tabriz rugs are known for, in a size that actually fits a real living room, this is the kind of weaving to buy and keep.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
