This 8'9" x 11'3" Persian Heriz is the format the villages east of Tabriz have built their reputation on: a deep madder red field, a broad stepped medallion anchored in the center, and open ivory corner spandrels that lift the whole drawing. The pile is hand-knotted wool at 3/8", dense underfoot and cut evenly, on a cotton foundation, and the condition is excellent with full pile from selvage to selvage. At just under 9 by just over 11 feet it sits comfortably as one of the large 9x11 Persian rugs that float a full seating group without crowding the walls. Design and Motifs

The center medallion is drawn as an 8 pointed star within a lobed frame, outlined in ivory so it reads instantly from across a room, with a small gold rosette at the exact middle and hooked latch motifs stepping out to north, south, east and west pendants. Around it the field is filled edge to edge with angular palmettes, serrated leaves, hooked vine sections and tiny stylized flower heads, all drawn in straight lines and 45 degree turns rather than curves, which is the signature of true geometric Persian rugs. The 4 corners carry ivory spandrels packed with the same vocabulary in reverse, and the main border alternates octagonal rosettes with angular vine brackets between narrow ivory and gold guard stripes.

A Deep Red Field Framed in Ivory and Navy

The dominant color is a saturated madder red that shifts between brick and true crimson as the light moves across the wool, visible in the angled photographs where the pile catches the light in bands. Against it the ivory reads almost chalk white, used for the corner spandrels, the outline of the medallion and the thin guard stripes, so the layout stays legible instead of dissolving into pattern. Deep navy blue does the structural work inside the medallion, in the pendant cartouches and across the main border ground, while small touches of gold, soft rust, pale blue green and a little dark brown appear in the rosettes and leaf tips. It is a warm, high contrast palette that sits well with wood floors, leather and brass.

Heriz Weaving East of Tabriz

Heriz is a group of weaving villages east of Tabriz on the slopes below Mount Sabalan, where the mineral rich water is credited with the toughness and shine of the local wool. Weavers there work from memory and from small scale drawings rather than a full point by point cartoon, which is why the line stays angular and each rug carries small asymmetries in the field. The back of this piece, shown against a ruler, gives an honest look at the weave: firm, regular knotting on a cotton foundation with the color changes clean on the reverse. Heriz village work is prized less for extreme fineness than for the thing it actually delivers, decades of daily traffic with the pile still standing, and this example has that heft in hand.
