Black grounds are harder to weave well than most buyers realise, because every line of drawing has to carry itself without help from the field. This hand-knotted Oriental rug does it with a Ziglar all over floral pattern: slim ivory and gold vines travelling the full length of a deep black field, with a broad sage and ivory border holding all 4 sides. The pile is fine natural wool, medium height, with the kind of soft luster you can see in the close-up photographs, and the knotting is dense enough that the thinnest tendril still reads as a clean line. It has never been used, it fits the standard room proportion that our customers search for in 8x10 Oriental rugs, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. This is a true all over floral design, so the pattern repeats evenly across the field and the rug can be turned or placed under furniture without losing its composition. Large open faced rosettes, roughly the size of a saucer, sit at measured intervals in ivory, gold and soft green, each with a small red or copper center. Between them run serrated acanthus leaves, curling split palmettes and thin vine tendrils that wander rather than march, which is what gives the field its relaxed, antique drawing. At the very center sits a small lattice of dots and 8 petal rosettes, a quiet pause in the pattern. The main border is drawn with alternating floral bouquets and leaf sprays on a sage and ivory ground, bracketed by narrow guard stripes of small 4 petal flowers, and the corners are resolved cleanly on all 4 sides.

The Color Palette: Black, Sage Green and Ivory

The field is a deep, saturated black that leans very slightly blue in daylight and goes near ink-dark under lamplight, and because the wool has a natural sheen it never looks flat or dyed-out. Against it, the drawing is built from a tight family of warm neutrals: antique ivory and cream for the flower heads, a dusty sage green for the leafwork, soft gold and honey for the vines, and brown and copper where the leaves roll over. Small touches of brick red and burnt orange sit in the flower centers and border bouquets, just enough to keep the whole thing from reading cold. The border ground is a pale sage and ivory tone that photographs lighter from above, and the outer edge finishes in a narrow band of black that frames the rug against a light floor. Ivory cotton fringe finishes both ends.

Woven in India: Weaving Town and Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that with confidence after decades of buying there. The weaving centers that produce Ziglar designs work on vertical looms with a cotton foundation, hand-carded fine wool, and a medium pile that is sheared level after the rug comes off the loom. You can see the quality in the back-of-rug and rolled-edge photographs: an even, tightly packed knot, no loose or stretched rows, straight selvages and corners that lie flat without blocking. The wool itself is the main story, a long staple fleece with enough lanolin left in it to take light the way older rugs do, which is why the ivory and gold drawing glows slightly against the black.
