8' x 10'3" Indian Jaipur Rug | Antique Washed Floral Design | Fine Wool, Never Used
This 8' x 10'3" rug was hand-knotted in Jaipur, India, on a cotton foundation with a fine weave wool pile, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity. The drawing is a classical antique all-over floral, but the color has been pulled all the way down into soft neutrals: a sand beige ground, faded sage green, warm brown and quiet flickers of peach. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, so the pile stands full and level from end to end and the hand-tied fringe is still perfectly straight. At 8 feet across and just over 10 feet long it fills the footprint most buyers are after when they shop 8x10 rugs, with enough width to carry a sofa and two chairs fully on the wool.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The washed out, sun bleached look of this rug is deliberate. It is a new weave finished with an antique wash, not a faded or worn piece, and the condition is perfect throughout. The pale streaks that show in a few of the angled floor shots are warehouse light reflecting off the direction of the pile, not marks on the wool. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The field is drawn as a continuous lattice of scrolling vines that carries large open palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, pomegranate forms and long lanceolate leaves, mirrored left to right so the eye reads order rather than repetition. The weaver filled several of the larger blossoms with tiny checkerboards, zigzag bands and dotted grids, a device from old workshop drawings that gives a close-up viewer something to find, and outlined a handful of leaf tips in near black so the pale drawing does not go flat. A narrow inner guard separates the field from a wide main border of linked palmettes and flowering vine, which is in turn framed by sage stripes studded with small dark trefoils. The result sits squarely in the tradition of all-over floral rugs, which means furniture can be placed anywhere on it without cutting a central motif in half.
The Faded Neutral Palette
The ground is a pale sand beige with an oatmeal cast, and the border steps up only slightly into a warmer camel. Everything else is a whisper: muted sage green through the leaves and guard stripes, soft cinnamon brown in the vines, apricot and peach in the petals, with occasional dusty plum and a cool grey blue appearing in the smaller flowers. Charcoal black is used sparingly, a few petals and leaf outlines at a time, and it is that restraint that keeps the whole rug reading as a neutral rather than a pattern. Contrast is intentionally low, so in daylight the rug behaves almost like a textured solid, while under lamplight the wool picks up a faint honey sheen and the greens come forward. It is the kind of floor that sits comfortably with white walls, oak, linen upholstery and warm metals, and it will not fight artwork or a patterned chair.
Jaipur Weaving and Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great hand-knotting centers of modern India, and India is now where most of the world's genuinely good contemporary hand-knotted work is made. That is a statement about skill and scale: the looms, the dye houses and the finishing workshops all sit close together, which is how a piece like this gets a fine weave, a clean antique wash and a true, even drawing in one place. The back view shows what matters in an Oriental rug of this type: tight rows of knots on a cotton foundation, legible motifs from the reverse, straight selvedges and ends finished by hand. The wool is spun for softness rather than for a heavy chunky pile, so the surface feels smooth underfoot while still holding the crisp outline of each palmette.
