This 8' x 10' Savonnerie is the French court formula worked in hand-knotted wool: a compartment field of 20 flower bouquets locked inside a crimson strapwork lattice, wrapped in a wide gold border of acanthus scrolls and roses. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the drawing is crisp enough that individual petals and leaf veins read cleanly from standing height, and the ivory cotton fringe is hand-tied and fully intact. Design and Motifs

The field is divided into 5 rows of 4 compartments, each one an octagonal cartouche holding its own bouquet. No 2 bouquets repeat exactly: roses, tulips, carnations, poppies and budding sprays are drawn at slightly different angles, some spilling leaves past the frame, which keeps a strict grid from looking mechanical. The compartments are separated by a crimson lattice outlined in gold arabesque scrollwork, and at every intersection sits a small 8 petal rosette on a pale ground. The border does the heavy lifting on the outside: a broad gold band carrying continuous acanthus volutes with rose heads, buds and fine green foliage, held between narrow guard stripes and a dark outer edge. The corners are resolved properly, with the scroll turning through all 4 rather than being cut off, which is a mark of a well drawn cartoon rather than a rushed copy.

A Deep Green Field Read Against Crimson and Gold

The ground is a very dark forest green that reads almost black in low light and opens into true green where the light rakes across the pile, as seen in the close detail photograph. Against that depth the lattice is a strong cool crimson, edged in soft gold that separates the 2 strong colors and stops them from fighting.
