Design and Motifs

The center is an oval cartouche in cream, ringed by a narrow gold line and a band of small white 5 petal blossoms, with a starburst rosette of gold and olive leaves and pink tipped buds radiating from the middle. Around it run 2 concentric garland rings of leafy vine tied with ribbon, the outer one wider and looser, so the medallion appears to float rather than sit flat. Each of the 4 corners carries a large bouquet: lilies, roses and open blossoms spilling from scrolled acanthus and horn shaped forms, drawn with the shading and depth that gives Aubusson work its painterly reputation. Slender flowering vines trace an inner rectangle around the field, meeting small rosette medallions at the midpoints of each side, and half wreaths with a central bud break the top and bottom edges. The wide ivory border is a continuous rose garland on a green trailing stem, with small gold framed diamond lozenges marking the corners, all held between narrow brick red guard stripes.

The Brick Red, Ivory and Soft Green Palette

The field is a warm brick red with a slight terracotta cast, deeper and earthier than a true crimson, and it is left almost entirely open so the color carries the room on its own. Against it, the ivory of the border and the medallion reads as a soft clotted cream rather than a bright white, which keeps the contrast gentle instead of graphic. Aubusson is a town in central France whose workshops were producing tapestry woven floor coverings for the aristocracy from the 17th century onward, granted royal manufactory status and working from painted cartoons rather than the geometric templates used elsewhere. The technique is weft faced tapestry: the pattern is built up color block by color block on a cotton warp, with no knot and no pile, which demands that the weaver follow the drawing line for line. Today the finest hand woven reproductions of these designs come out of Chinese workshops, where the tradition has been maintained on vertical looms with hand spun wool and the same slow cartoon based method, and where the drawing standard is genuinely high. Look at the corner bouquets and the shading in the medallion rosette: that gradation is achieved with yarn selection alone.
