8' x 10' Ivory William Morris Rug | Arts and Crafts Floral Design | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New
This is a hand-knotted wool rug in the William Morris idiom, drawn with the flat, confident line of the Arts and Crafts movement rather than the curved vine of a court workshop. The ivory field is left deliberately open so that each leaf, tulip and rosette reads as its own shape, and the soft light brown border frames it without competing. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, dense underfoot and long-wearing, and the piece is brand new and never used. It is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a machine product or a tufted copy, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. At 8' x 10' it sits squarely in the most useful 8x10 area rug footprint.
Design and Motifs
The field carries an all over floral design with no medallion, built on thin arching stems that branch and rejoin across the ivory ground. Hanging from them are broad serrated leaves, split palmettes, closed tulip buds, small 4 petal rosettes with dark centers, and dark brown feathered sprigs that stand up like little cypress forms. The drawing repeats in mirrored pairs top to bottom, which is what gives the layout its calm balance, and the artist has varied the colour of each repeat so no two neighbouring leaves match. The wide main border runs a procession of large lobed leaf cartouches alternating with pale rosettes and tiny curling tendrils, closed on both sides by a narrow running vine stripe. Close up in the detail photos you can see the outlining: almost every motif is edged in a contrasting colour, a hallmark of the flat, graphic Arts and Crafts style.
A Study in Ivory, Light Brown and Garden Colour
The two main colours are ivory and light brown. The field is a warm, slightly creamy ivory, closer to unbleached wool than to white, and it takes on a soft glow where the pile catches light. Surrounding it is the main border in a muted light brown that reads as mushroom or taupe, cooler than the field and restrained enough to let the motifs carry the eye. Inside that neutral framework the accents do the work: rust and terracotta in the leaf cartouches and the little cross shaped flowers, sage and olive green in the serrated leaves, slate blue in the palmettes and the finer stems, soft gold and apricot in the buds, chalky white in the small border rosettes, and near black brown in the sprigs and outlines. The narrow guard stripes pick up the same rust and green, which ties the border back to the field. For an ivory and beige area rug, it is unusually rich in colour without ever becoming loud.
Made in India: Where the Best Hand-Knotted Work Happens Now
This rug was made in India, and that is a recommendation rather than a caveat. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is produced today, by workshops with deep benches of trained weavers, their own hand spinning and dyeing, and the discipline to hold a drawing steady across 80 square feet. The William Morris repertoire suits them: the pattern demands clean flat shapes, precise outlining and consistent vegetal colour across hundreds of thousands of knots, all of which this piece delivers. The back photo shows an even, tightly packed weave on a cotton foundation with straight, regular rows and no pulling at the selvedge, and the 3/8" wool pile has the firm spring of good handspun yarn. It belongs with other serious modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs, bought for the weaving as much as for the look.
