8' x 11'5" Persian Nain Rug | Wool & Silk Ruby Red Field | Ivory Border, Star Medallion

Most Nain rugs come out of the loom on an ivory or pale blue ground, which is exactly why this one stops you. The field here is a deep ruby red, and the usual Nain palette of ivory, sky blue and camel is drawn across it in silk-highlighted wool. It is a Persian Nain rug in the classic town formula, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a low, tightly clipped pile that keeps every hairline vine legible. Design and Motifs

The center holds a 16 point star medallion, built in concentric rings: a small rosette at the core, a ring of radiating spikes, then a band of paired blue cartouches and palmettes, then the outer star points that break into the red field. Above and below it, two matching pendants continue the axis. The field itself is not a plain ground but a dense lattice of thin, whip-like vines carrying Shah Abbasi palmettes, small lotus heads and serrated leaves, all drawn in outline so the red reads through them. Four corner spandrels in ivory anchor the composition and repeat the medallion vocabulary at quarter scale. The border system runs to seven bands: a wide ivory main border of alternating palmettes and cusped floral cartouches, flanked by camel-ground guard stripes, narrow blue vine stripes and pearl-and-leaf minor bands, with the outermost stripe finishing the rug cleanly at the selvage.

A Ruby Red Field Against Ivory, Sky Blue and Camel

The field colour is a true ruby, a cool wine red with a slight blue undertone rather than the orange-leaning red of a village weave, and it stays even from one end to the other. Against it the ivory reads almost white in the open areas of the medallion and warms to cream in the main border. Blue does the real work of the palette and appears in three distinct values: a soft powder blue filling the medallion cartouches, a mid sky blue on the vines and flower heads, and near-black navy used sparingly for outlines and the small dark accents in the guard stripes. A pale camel runs through the flanking border stripes and the leaf forms, softening the contrast between the red and the ivory. The silk highlights are placed on the flower centers and vine tips, so the pattern lifts and shifts brightness as you walk around it.

Nain: The Town and the Weave

Nain sits on the edge of the central Persian desert, east of Isfahan, and its weaving industry is young by Persian standards: the town turned from fine wool cloth to rugs in the 1930s, bringing the Isfahan drawing tradition with it. That inheritance shows in the curved line, the balanced vine work and the discipline of the border. Nain weavers work on a cotton warp and weft with a low clipped wool pile and silk worked in for outline and highlight, which is why the pattern here holds such small detail without blurring. The back seen in the final photograph shows a fine, tight, even knot with no slack or wandering rows, the mark of workshop weaving rather than village work. A low-pile Nain of this quality wears slowly and holds its clarity for decades, and in 8' x 11'5" it covers a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled out.
