8'9" x 12'8" Persian Nain Rug | Ruby Red Wool and Silk Star Medallion | Never Used

This 8'9" x 12'8" Nain has never been unrolled in a home, and it shows: the pile stands upright everywhere, the fringe is untrimmed and the selvedges are still crisp. The formula is the classic central Persian one done at full room scale, a ruby red field under a broad ivory border with a single star medallion anchoring the center. The pile is wool with silk used to outline the drawing, which is why the vines and blossoms read as clean lines instead of soft shapes, and why the red field shifts between matte and satin as you move around it. At this length it belongs among large Persian rugs, holding a sofa, two chairs and a coffee table with border to spare. Design and Motifs

The center holds an 8 pointed star medallion built in tiers: a small rosette at the core, a green disc of tiny blossoms around it, then an ivory and navy star rimmed with palmettes and curling leaf tips. Above and below it, on the long axis, sit ivory pendant cartouches that repeat the medallion drawing in miniature, and matching lobed lozenges float out toward the sides. The rest of the field is a continuous scrolling vine, not a repeat block, so no two quarters of the rug look quite alike: lotus palmettes, multi petal rosettes, half open buds, feathered leaves and a few elongated boteh forms all hang off one thin vine system that circles back on itself. The main ivory border carries the same vine at a larger cadence, punctuated by rosettes and shield shaped cartouches, and it is framed by camel tan guard bands filled with small lilies and hooked tendrils, then narrow blue vine stripes that keep the whole frame from crowding the field.

A Ruby Red Field Framed in Ivory

The ground is a true ruby red, deep and slightly wine leaning under low light, and it stays even from end to end with the gentle tonal breathing you expect from natural dye lots rather than any harsh abrash line. Against it the drawing works in a cool palette: ivory and cream for the blossom bodies, indigo navy for the outlines and the medallion ground, a clear mid blue and a lighter sky blue for the leaves and vine, plus soft grey blue where the silk catches light. Warm notes keep it from going cold, with camel tan through the guard borders, chocolate brown in the small leaf tips and a hunter green disc at the heart of the medallion. The main border is a buttery ivory that reads almost champagne where the silk highlights sit, so the red field is framed rather than fenced in. In a room, the effect is formal red at the floor level and light at the edges, which is why this colorway sits comfortably with dark wood, brass and cream upholstery.

Nain, the Town and the Weave

Nain sits in central Persia at the western edge of the Dasht-e Kavir, a few hours east of Isfahan, and it came to rugs late. The town made fine handwoven wool cloth for centuries, and when that trade fell away in the 1930s the same workshops turned their skill toward knotting, borrowing the curvilinear Isfahan idiom and refining it into something of their own. That history explains the construction here: a tight cotton foundation, a low clipped wool pile and silk used sparingly as outline rather than as a whole field, the combination that lets a Nain hold a curved line without breaking it into steps. Red ground Nains are the less common variant, since most of the town's output leans ivory and blue, so a field this saturated at 8'9" x 12'8" is not a size and color you come across often. The weave is firm and flat to the hand, the back is tidy, and with the pile untouched this piece is starting its life rather than continuing someone else's.
